New Xylitol Gum Reported Better for Teeth
Two Detroit area men
are marketing a new sugar-
less gum imported from
Finland which appears to
be better for the teeth than
other sugarless chewing
gum products.
Ed Malkin and Arnie Fin-
kel are area distributors of
Hellas Original Xylitol
Gum. Xylitol is a natural
sweetener which several sci-
entific studies have shown
to help reduce cavities and
in some cases may prevent
cavities.
The U.S. Federal Drug
Administration approved it
as a sugar substitute in
1971.
Xylitol, a sugar alcohol,
makes up 50 percent of the
new product. Other sugar al-
cohols commonly used in
other • sugarless gums are
sorbitol and mannitol,
which dental experts have
said can promote tooth
decay. The Hellas Original
Xylitol Gum contains only
six percent sorbitot, prima-
rily used as a softener and
not as a sweetener.
The Finnish studies show
that Xylitol does not serve
as an energy source for bac-

teria and that it may neu-
tralize mouth acids and pro-
mote remineralization of
tooth enamel. The FDA, Na-
tional Institute of Dental
Health and the American
Dental Association are con-
ducting tests on Xylitol to
determine its effectiveness
as an aid to dental health.
For information about
Hellas Xylitol Gum, call
Malkin or Finkel, JE 6-1026.
