Soviets' Presence in Israel Protested

TEL AVIV (JTA )—A
group of Soviet Jews living
in Israel demonstrated last
week against the presence
in Israel of 11 Russian scien-
tists participating in an in-
ternational space research
convention here.
The group of 11 former
aliya activists, including
Yasha Kazakoff, Dov Sperl-
ing, Michael Stiglitz and
Sylva Zalmanson, held a
quiet demonstration oppo-
site the Pal Hotel, site of
the convention.
"We demonstrate against
the presence of the Rus-

Resist U.S. Coercion of Israel, Reform Leader Urges

sians in Israel," they said.
"We protest against any
contact with the Russians,
including scientific and cul-
tural, as long as Jews in
Russia are persecuted by
the authorities," Sperling
said.
Holding a poster that
said, "Release my family,"
Zalmanson said it was in-
conceivable that Russian
scientists can move freely
in Tel Aviv while Jews in
Russia are held in prison.
Stiglitz demanded freedom
for his brother-in-law, Ana-
toly Sharansky.

Judaism in America called
on the American Jewish
community Monday to

United States to pressure Is-

posed settlement of its con-
flict with the Arab states.
Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld,
president of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis
(CCAR) warned that there
are "clear signals from the

Wednesday morning, Labor
appeared to have won up to
54 percent of the vote, a
drop of about four percent-
age points from the pre-
vious election, but more
than adequate to ensure its
hegemony of Israel's giant
trade union federation.
Likud scored about 30 per-
cent, an impressive gain of
seven percent but a dis-
appointment to its lead-

ment for Change did
poorly, emerging with
about seven percent of the
votes in what was its first
contest in a Histadrut elec-

Most of the smaller fac-

Communists won about two
percent, down a half per-

Liberals dropped to barely
one percent from six per-
cent although they shared a
list with the Civil Rights
Movement. The leftist Shed
faction also polled about
one percent, down from the
three percent it won in the
last elections as Moked.
The Religious Workers
list, fell from four to two
percent. The Hillel Seidel
group, the Yemenite list,
the Independent list and the
Black Panthers all failed to
score the minimum number
of votes to qualify for repre-
sentation in Histadrut.
