Zionists Install Morris Cooper Trilingual Volume Will Honor Memory of Bernard Isaacs Morris Cooper recently was installed as president of the Detroit Zionist Feder- ation. "Sefer B. Isaacs:: a book of stories and articles in memory of Bernard Isaacs, United Hebrew Schools su- perintendent who died in 1970, is being prepared by the publications committee of the Bernard Isaacs Me- morial Volume. Rabbi Max Weine is chairman. Isaacs was known as a master of the Hebrew short story and 15 hitherto unpub- lished Hebrew stories by him will be included in the book. Three of the stories have been translated into Yiddish by Judith Stern, daughter of UHS Superin- tendent Jay Stern. Detroiters who have con- tributed articles to the vol- ume include Morris Nobel ( - Reflections on Isaacs' Sto- ries" in Hebrew); Wolf Sny- der ("My Unforgettable Friend" in Yiddish) and Rabbi Weine ("Bernard Isaacs-A Memoir" in Eng- lish). Israeli Banks Elaine Canvasser, secre- tary of the Temple Beth El Sisterhood and an active member of Jewish women's organizations, died June 12 at age 51. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Canvasser was a member of Tethple Beth El, Hadas- sah, the National Council of Jewish Women, Women's American ORT and the sis- terhood of the Downtown Synagogue. She resided at 52 Cambridge, Pleasant Ridge. She leaves her husband, Marvin; two sons. The art work and illustra- tions in the volume are being done by Ruben Isaacs, and the book is ex- pected to the published later this year. - In Loving Memory of Dear Wife and Mother Dr. Milton Steinhardt, Sarah Lev, Dr. Harold Mathis and representatives of the UHS teaching staff and of the Jew- ish Community Center Hebrew Department. Mrs. Mathis was known in the community as a Hebrew and Bible scholar. She taught in the UHS for more than 40 years and adult Bible classes at the Jewish Center. At the time of her death she was com- pleting work on a Hebrew-Eng- lish-Yiddish dictionary. She fre- quently had articles printed in various Hebrew magazines and lectured to local groups. Oscar S 'verman, founder and past president of Mid- west Textile Co., died June 14 at age 82. Born in Detroit, Mr. Sil- verman was associated with the textile company since 1926. He retired two years ago. He was a mem- ber of Temple Beth El, a life member of the Hannah Schloss Oldtimers, Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith, Frank- lin Hills Country Club and a charter member of the Standard City Club. He re- sided at 16300 W. Nine Mile, Southfield. He leaves his wife, Elsie; a son, Richard; a daughter, Carol; three sisters, Mrs. Hy (Belle) Schlafer of Hol- lywood, Fal., Ethel and Rosetta; and three grand- sons.
