THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Rabbis, Social Workers, Doctors Concerned by Likud Government (Continued from Page 1) "It would be a sad day for Israel and for world Jewry were the Israel gov- ernment, for whatever polit- ical advantage, to permit an Orthodox religious minor- ity to suppress or to exer- cise a veto over other forms of religious expres- sion. The new government must recognize the value of free competition in the cul- ral arena no less than it .oes in the commercial arena. "Both our Jewish heri- tage and our American ex- perience have taught us that authentic Judaism thrives best in an atmos- phere of inquiry and expe- rience," Dr. Cohen said. A similar statement was unanimously endorsed by the constituent bodies of the World Council of Syna- gogues, the international or- ganization of Conservative Judaism, which includes the United Synagogue of America, the Rabbinical As- sembly, the National Feder- BIG SELECTION! Meanwhile, concessions by Likud to the ultra-Ortho- dox Agudat Israel came un- der fire from the Israel Medical Association, which wrote to Premier-designate Menahem Begin urging no change in the present laws governing autopsies. • The Social Workers Union warned Likud that it would fight any attempt to amend the abortion law by remov- ing the social condition of the mother as one of the grounds for approval of abortion. The Aguda, with four Knesset seats, has agreed to join a Likud-led coali- tion. It made several de- mands in the religious and social areas including curbs on abortion and barring au- topsies without family con- sent. Likud was acquiesced to these demands. In a letter to Begin, Dr. Rami Yishai, chairman of the Medical Association, del- cared that any amendment to the law on autopsies would seriously affect the quality of medical care in Israel. He said that physi- cians do their utmost now to comply with the wishes of the families but in cer- tain cases autopsies must be performed in the inter- ests of national health and family objections must not be allowed to override medi- cal considerations. Dr. Yishai noted that the National Religious Party (NRP), for many years a coalition partner, never made such demands and that whenever con- troversies arose over au- topsies they were generally settled to the satisfaction of the NRP and the medical profession. Itzhak Kadman, leader of the Social Workers Union, wrote to the Likud lead- ership that the present abor- tion law was adopted in re- for sponse to the needs of the under-privileged sector of society. To eliminate social condi- tions as a reason for abor- tion would place a severe burden on the poor, he said. He cited unofficial statis- tics that showed that about 80 percent of the abortion requests brought before pro- fessional screening com- mittees for approval cited social condition.
