A resolution adopted by the conference said that the readiness of Jewish commu- nal agencies to employ women in top executive posts remains grudging, re- luctant and unwilling. The resolution called on the leaders of Jewish com- munal agencies to examine their hiring practices, both explicit and implicit, for dis- criminatory patterns and to make a conscious effort to broaden the opportunities for women to fill decision- making jobs. The charge of unequal op- portunities for women de- spite recent advances in women's rights stemmed from a study of 319 commu- nal agencies employing 2,200 people, 54 percent of them women. It showed that in the job categories of executive director or assist- ant executive director, women held only 2.5 per- cent of the positions. Greek Festival the roman feriwee 27822 ORCHARD LAKE RD. Disparity in salaries was also revealed. The study dis- closed that only 5 percent of women employes re- ceived salaries of $20,000 or more per year in contrast to 57 percent of the male employes. Of 1,200 women covered in the study, only 10 (0.8 percent) held the top executive positions in their respective agencies and 45 were in the next highest cat- egory. By contrast, 71.5 per- cent were line workers. The study covered five fields of Jewish communal service : federations ; com- munity centers; hospitals; family and social service agencies; and old age homes. Women accounted for 75 percent of the profes- sional workers in the fam- ily and social service agencies, but held only three of the top executive posts. Adlai Stevenson (D Ill.) said there is no reason to fear the results of Israel's- elections or to doubt Amer- ica's • "irrevocable" com- mitment to the Jewish state. Addressing a meeting of the American Jewish Con- gress' policy-making N ation- al Governing Council, Ste- venson said he saw no rea- son to believe the election results would harm U.S.-Is- rael relations. "The government of Is- rael will be confronted by inescapable realities and also by a chance for peace which could pass," he de- clared. "It would assign to that government the most irrational bent to conclude from the statements of one man, often out of context, that a new Israel govern- ment might reject its only ally and the solemn inter- national undertakings of its predecessor governments for a policy that implies war and invites a violent end to our struggle to right the terrible wrongs and make a reality of Israel." Stevenson said that "Noth- ing warrants such fear. The American commitment to Israel is irrevocable. It de- pends not on the steadfast- ness of America—that is not in doubt—it depends on the steadfastness of Israel and that is not in doubt ei- ther." He stressed that "two cen- turies of experience with self-government at home should enable us to accept changes abroad with the equanimity with which we accept them here." He noted that in a democratic government if a mistake was made it can be un- made. "But it is premature at least, to concluce that a mistake was made in the re- cent (Israeli) election." - three women executive di- nities.
