Ousted U.S. Attorney Claims Trifa Case Is in Jeopardy

The fired U.S. attorney in
Detroit, Phillip Van Dam,
charged last weekend that
his political differences
with President Carter over
retaining his job may have
spilled over in a Justice De-
partment decision to deny
travel authorization for two
staff attorneys working on
the government's case
against alleged pro-Nazi
Archbishop Valerian Trifa.
Van Dam, who is Jewish,
was fired from his post
after refusing to submit his
resignation after President
Jimmy Carter was elected.
Van Dam is a Republican
and was appointed by Presi-
dent Ford last year.
Van Dam fought his oust-
er, saying Carter had prom-

ised to make appointments
based on qualifications, not
politics.
Van Dam told reporters
he thought his personal rela-
tionship with the depart-
ment was having an effect
on the way the department
was reviewing the Trifa
case. even though he was

not personally handling about his connections to the
case.
