DENVER—The 35th an-
nual convention of the
American Jewish Press As-
sociation ended last week
with election of a new presi-
dent, Norman Gold, editor
of the American Jewish
World of Minneapolis.
As the convention drew to
a close, a resolution was
drafted criticizing the Great-
er Los Angeles Jewish Fed-
eration Council for embark-
ing upon the publication of
a newspaper when the Jew-
ish community is already
well served by three pub-
lications.
Other resolutions con-
gratulated the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency upon its
60th anniversary and called
upon President Jimmy Car-
ter to continue his support
of human rights for people
all over the world including
the Soviet Jews and the
Jews of Syria.
Outgoing president Rob-
ert A. Cohn, editor of the
St. Louis Jewish Light, told
the assemblage that one of
the pioudest achievements
of his five-year presidency
was the growth of the
AJPA.
Noting that with 70 mem-
bers at present, the Associ-
ation has nearly doubled in
size. Cohn said that the
adoption of an open mem-
bership policy has strength-
ened the organization
through the involvement of
additional editors and pub-
lishers who have contrib-
uted much to the growth of
Jewish journalism in Amer-
ica.

Eban Is Critical
of Carter Policy
JERUSALEM (JTA)—
Former Foreign Minister
Abba Eban- was obliquely
critical of President Carter
when he questioned the effi-
cacy of open diplomacy as
practiced by the United
States with respect to the
Middle East conflict.
Addressing an inter-
national conference here on
the role of the media in po-
litical conflicts, Eban said
"The magic of open diplo-
macy has been oversold.
When diplomacy is open, it
is less congenial to com-
promise. If it is dramatic
and histrionic, it is less
likely to provoke reason. If
the Arabs can get their
main demands through
open diplomacy, it is hard
to see what _Israel would
have to offer at a peace con-
ference."
He said that excessive
zeal in delineating the condi-
tions of a possible settle-
ment in advance could dis-
rupt the balance of in-
centives that is the key to
all successful negotiations.
He warned-that the Arabs
may now believe that the
U.S. has the will and capaci-
ty to coerce Israel into poli-
cies that most Israelis
would regard as in-
compatible to the national
interest.
of Israel in Los Angeles,
Zvi Brosh.
Philip Slomovitz reviewed
the early years of the Asso-
ciation when it functioned
as the American Associ-
ation of English Jewish
Newspapers.
Japan Leader,
Allon Hold Talks
JERUSALEM (JTA)-
Foreign Minister Yigal
Allon met with Japan's Dep-
uty Minister of Defense
Koichi Hamada Tuesday.
He urged the Japanese
government to increase its
trade with Israel, following
the example of Western Eu-
ropean states which main-
tain trade with both Israel
and the Arab states. The
visitor said he would report
to his government on his
duscussions with Allon.
Joseph Polakoff, JTA
Washington correspondent,
another guest speaker at
the convention, urged
strong affiliation by Ameri-
can Jewish publishers with
the World Confederation of
Jewish Journalists.

Rally for Syrian
Jews in Tel Aviv
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A
large cage erected in the
center of Tel Aviv's busy
Dizengoff St. attracted
throngs of spectators Mon-
day. Locked inside were
two young women students
who were demonstrating
for the right of Syrian Jews
to emigrate, especially
women of marriageable age
who are unable to find Jew-
ish husbands in Syria.
The demonstration was or-
ganized by the Israeli Stu-
dents Association as a
mark of solidarity with Syr-
ian Jewry. They called on
President Hafez Assad of
Syria to grant Jews the
same right to leave the
country that is enjoyed by
other Syrians.
