The Jewish News: Some confusion has arisen in the Jewish commu- nity recently, regarding the kosher status of canned tuna fish. The confusion stems from a responsum that was recently issued by Rabbi Moses Feinstein, dean of the Yeshiva Tiferes Jerusalem in New York City. In his responsum. Rabbi Feinstein stated that spe- cial caution should be exer- cised in the purchase of tuna fish because many types of fish are caught in the net together with tuna, and some of these may be non-kosher species of fish. At the OU tuna canneries, all the fish that are brought in from the sea are care- fully inspected, to separate the kosher from the non- kosher fish. Then. the tuna are separated among their various species because not all species of tuna are suit- able for commercial use. Then the tuna are sepa- rated according to size and shape. After all these prepara- tions, the tuna are refrig- erated or frozen and ship- ped to another location, where they are fileted and desquamated, after receiv- ing their final inspection. In addition. at the OU su- pervised tuna plants, only kosher OU-endorsed oils are used in the packing of the tuna. The tuna fish that finally arrives on the mar- ketplace, marked by the seal of the OU is absolutely kosher beyond all question. Fresh fish that are of the kosher variety may be rec- ognized by the possession of fins and easily removable scales. A complete list of the kosher species of fish is available at the Detroit of- fice of the Union of Ortho- dox Jewish Congregations of America. For informa- tion, call 547-2999. Rabbi Jack Goldman Arab Aim: to Destroy Israel Editor, The Jewish News: In response to those who maintain reservations about Mr. Begin's policy, don't be disillusioned. It is quite clear, that even if Israel yields and returns all of the territories acquired during the Six-Day War, peace will not be achieved. This conclusion is reached after noting that the Arab nations in 1967 carefully executed a plan to wage war against Israel. At that time in history, occu- pied lands were not an issue. Therefore, if Israel returns the occupied terri- tories, why should the Arab leaders • suddenly desist from destroying the Jewish state? This is- only one of the many flaws contained in the Arabs' claim that re- turning all occupied terri- tories and settling the Pales- tinian issue, will bring Alter M onument? A Lesson in Jewish Roots Editor, The Jewish News: If you are looking for an in- stant reminder of your Jewish roots, turn to your Siddur. Look at the Hebrew word 1l -1 Rearrange your letters in re- verse and you have i which in plain English sounds out ROOTS. Then, of course, the impor- tant thing is to occasionally dip into your Siddur for consolation and learning whether at home or in the synagogue. Herzl H.
