Since the establishment
of Israel in 1948, the sur-
rounding Arab states have
waged war against Israel
four times.
After the war of 1973 the
armies of Syria and Egypt
were defeated and only the
pressure of the U.S.
stopped Israel from com-
pleting their victory so that
for the next generation they
would stop thinking of an-
other war.
It is the first time in the
entire history of nations
that defeated countries try
to dictate peace terms!
When such responsible
personalities as Prince
;Saud Feisal, foreign min-
ister of Saudi Arabia; An-
war el Sadat, president of
Egypt; and Hafiz el Asad,
president of Syria say that
either Israel agrees to their
terms or else there will be
war, who do they want to in-
timidate? Menahem Begin,
the new rime minister?
The Israelis?
Don't they know that Is-
rael will never be able to
trust them even if a peace
agreement should be accom-
plished. Isaiah expressed it
so beautifully when he
wrote "to rely upon Egypt
is like to lean on a cane,
which will pierce your
hand!"

U. INTERVIEW
Critique Critiqued
Editor, The Jewish News:
I am grateful for Philip
Applebaum's kind words
about my book, "Finding
Our Fathers: A Guidebook
to Jewish Genealogy" (May
20). And I appreciate his re-
ferring me to further Jew-
ish resources in the Detroit
area of which I was una-
ware.
But I think he has done
both me and his readers a
disservice by suggesting
that they avoid my chap-
ters on Judaica and the
Bible. Both chapters were
reviewed carefully, ,prior to
publication by scholars in
those respective fields, and
I stand by the information
provided in them.
Mr. Applebaum criticizes
me for saying "that if one's
name is Cohen he should as-
sume he is a direct descend-
ant of the first priest of Is-
rael, Aaron, brother of
Moses." This is precisely
what I did not say.
In my discussion of the
Kohanim, on page 64 of my
book, I say, "I have yet to
come across any book or ar-
ticle that explicitly says all
Kohanim are direct descend-
ants of Aaron." And I add:
"The name (Cohen)
alone...is insufficient proof
of priestly descent, and on
the contrary, many Koha-
nim have names that sound
totally different."
