Party Mistakes, Histadrut Election
Prevent Labor Alignment Changes

BY MOSHE RON

TEL AVIV—The outcome
of the Israeli parliamentary
elections were like an earth-
quake. The Labor Align-
ment went down from 51 to
36 mandates. The strongest
opponents did not foresee
such a disaster.
The leaders of the Labor
Party refrain from accus-
ing each other because they
want to keep a -majority in

Zionist Revisionists Charge
Labor Zionists With Bias

NEW YORK (JTA)—The
United Zionists-Revisionists
who are linked with Men-
aham Begin's Likud Party
in Israel, accused the
Labor Zionist Movement of
"Jewish anti-Semitism."
A statement released by,
the UZR referred to a state--
ment by the Coordinating
Committee of the Labor Zi-
onists Movement last week
warning Lidud that its elec-
tion victory "did not in any
way endorse any radical
changes in the foreign or do-
mestic policies of Israel."
The UZR noted that in his
post-election statements,
Begin "issued a clarion call
for a government of nation-
al unity embracing all fac-
tions and Zionist parties
loyal to the state of Israel.
In light of this forthright ar-

voters he would have
achieved a better' result.
But he could hardly change
what the party leadership
had decided and the
voters took revenge.
The Labor Alignment can
not accept the proposal of
Menahem Begin to join a
government of national
unity_ Mapam is against it.
If it would not be the eve of
the Histadrut elections it
might be different.
But now the Labor Party
has only one 'aim: to keep
its majority in the Hista-
drut and then to try to build
up the split and shattered
party.

Knesset Veterans
Hold First Reunion

JERUSALEM (JTA—Old
faces were visible- and old
times were recalled when
some 100 former members
of the Knesset held their
first official reunion in the
Knesset chamber last week
and received certificates at-
testing to their service in Is-
rael's parliaments.
Of the 309 MKs who
helped make the laws since
the state was founded 30
years ago, only 193 are still
alive. Of that number, 102
were members of the Labor
Alignment, 45 of the parties
that now make up Likud
and the rest of other fac-
tions. "Here the Alignment
has a clear majority," one
of the veterans observed.
