Pios Jews sway back
and forth during prayer,
study and the reading of
the Torah.
A variety of reasons are
offered for this custom.
The author of the Turim
explains that this is done
because the Bible tells us
that when the Israelites
beheld the revelation of
the Divine Presence at
Sinai they swayed
(Exodue 20:15). The sway-
ing motion would then
reveal the inspirational
experience of the wor-
shipper or the person in
prayer who comes into
some contact with the Di-
vine Presence during his
activity in prayer, study
or reading the Torah.
Others point to the
verse in the Psalms
(Chapter 3 5) in which
David relates that "all of
his bones (or organs)" will
express his communica-
tions with the Almighty.
The idea behind this rea-
soning is that the com-
plete person, both his
body and soul, should be
invoved in communica-
tion with the Almighty.
Swaying is a means of de-
noting that even the body
is involved in the com-
munication.
