Volume Offers Advice on Coping With Death of One's Parents

Washington Post colum-
nist, Stephen Rosenfeld, in
his new book, "The Time of
Their Dying" (W.W. Norton
and Co.), offers others
faced with the approaching
deaths of parents advice on
how to cope with the situa-
tion.
While neither parent nor
child can suddenly change
the pattern of a lifetime,
they can move on from
where they have been:
"For me, a good relation-
ship became a special
one," recalls the author.
"Feelings and degrees of
feeling new to the family
were excavated and shared.
I could not shed all my awk-
wardness in the presence of
emotional intimacy with
my parents, but I could di- -
minish it to a point which
allowed exchanges that
glow for me still and that
underlie an abiding sense of
having completed an impor-
tant journey."
" 'Active listening' is a
highly effective means of
communication," he discov-
ered. "I found that

"At a certain point in the
sequence of dying, a com-
munity or city reduces it-
self to the handful of people
who gather by the side of
one's bed," observed the au-
thor. "This is the ultimate
occasion for receiving back
a lifetime's investment in
friendship and love."

It was only at the end
that Rosenfeld fully
grasped the, role his par-
ents' town—Pittsfield—had
played in their lives -and
was to play in their deaths.

"What I would say most
emphatically about the
death of a parent is that
one must be there," urges
Rosenfeld. "And, if the
time simply is not avail-
able, then the .need grows
to make what time. there is
fruitful. This requires an ef-
fort and a candor too sel-
dom drawn on in one's
daily routine."
"A parent's dying can let

care and their human con-
cern could not be matched.
Yet, a question troubled
him: would other, more
highly skilled doctors serve
their interests better? The

Resolve Dispute, Reaffirm Ties

BONN (JTA) — The long-
standing dispute between Is-
rael's embas,sy here and
the German-Israeli Associ-
ation (Deutsche-Israelische
Gesellschaft or "DIG")
over statements and actions
by DIG officials' which were
deemed hostile to Israel,
has been settled. At its an-
nual meeting in Bonn in
May, by an overwhelming
majority of 212-40, DIG's
members endorsed a state-
ment of principles com-
mitting the body to a firmly
pro-Israel course.

The settlement of the row
is regarded as a personal
triumph . for Ambassador
Yohanan Meroz, who at the
time of his arrival in No-
vember, 1974 conducted a
quiet, behind-the-scenes
campaign to oust left-wing-
ers apparently intent on
making DIG a "pro-Arab"
or "anti-Israel" instrument.
Meroz also played a key
part in drafting the state-
ment of principles.

Two key clauses in the
"guidelines" are a require-
ment that DIG parties vis-
iting Israel should seek out
"representative" organiza- -
tions for political talks, and
a statement that "official Is-
raeli policies are not to be
the subject of critical pub-
lic statements" by the DIG -
