By knowing what to ex- pect from grieving, Freese argues. we can allow our- selves the greatest potential for development. When we diminish the fears we have about grief, we will be pre- pared to find in it a means for growth. The awareness, for —ex- ample, that there are three stages to the grieving reac- tion can be of tremendous support. Initially, the mourner is numb and physically and mentally in a state of shock. He or she 'finds diffi- culty remembering even the simplest things such as phone numbers and names of friends, and may be unable to sleep or eat. Knowing that this is ac- tually a normal reaction, the griever and those close to him or her will be able to accept these signs and not fear that they represent a permanent state or a loss of mind. Allowing these re- actions to take their course will then bring the mourner to the second stage. There is a loss of interest in the world, a sense of loneliness. and panic. During this phase, il- logical outbursts of anger and huge family feuds often transpire. With an aware- ness that this may occur, the griever and family can better understand what _is happening and be assured that this phase, too, will pass. The final stage, usually six months to two years after the loss ; is the begin- ning of recovery and return to a fuller life. Setbacks do happen: often on an anniver- sary or a birthday the griev- er will feel as if intense mourning had returned. But this is not true, for recov- ery naturally follows set- backs in this final stage. Freese covers - many areas of the grieving proc- ess, including the impor- tance of ritual and religion, the complex subject of grieving by and for dren, sexual problems expe- rienced by grievers, and the important role of psy- chological and religious counseling. He lists how- to's for dealing with the mourner, and organizations that can guide and support. Zionist Director.
