Japanese Christian Is Awarded Doctorate by Jewish Seminary

overwhelmed by the work
of Abraham Joshua Hes-
chel. Teshima translated
part of a Heschel book and
published it without the au-
thor's permission. Then he
asked forgiveness and
came to New York to study
under the master:
Four years later, armed
with a master's degree,
Teshima began teaching phi-
losophy at the University of
Judaism, the West Coast
branch of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary. "Then I

tongue, Jacob Yuroh Tesh-
ima finally won his earthly
reward this month ; he was
awarded a doctorate from
the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary of America, writes Is-
rael Shenker in the New
York Times.
His
dissertation
was
called "Zen Buddhism and
Hasidism,. a Comparative
Study." Teshima, a Chris-
tian, was determined to
repay his debt to his teach-
ers, beginning with Martin
Buber, in 1962.

When Teshima's father,
Ikuroh A. Teshima, founder
of .6 Christian sect which
closely identifies with Is-
rael, heard about this, he
was delighted. His Original
Gospel. Movement, also
known as Makuya (Taber-
nacle), honors Judaism for
its gifts to Christianity. The
sect uses the menora as its
symbol because it repre-
sents the divine presence
whereas the cross sym-
bolizes pain, the sect believ-
es. When the son announced
his intentions, the father
gave his blessing and a one-
way ticket.
Buber had retired, so
Teshima went to Gershom
Scholem, the scholar of
mystical Judaism. Study
Hebrew, said Scholem.
Teshima then enrolled at.

nearby apartment, he sat
writing his disSertation. He
also applied for a job teach-
ing in Jewish studies:About
140 others applied for the
same job. "After receiving
the degree, I realized it
