Manpower Group
Assisting Israel
NEW YORK—ACTS, a
group of American and Ca-
nadians with trade skills,
was conceived after the sud-
den mobilization in Israel
when 14,000 Americans of-
fered to fill the vacant
spots in that nation's facto-
ries in the 1973 war. Unclas-
sified and unscreened, with
no preparations made for
their integration, they be-
came a symbol of Amer-
ica's willingness to help
and futility to organize on
such short notice.
The ACTS group is re-
cruiting all types of volun-
teers to fill essential civil-
ian jobs if they are needed,
particularly truck drivers,
longshoremen, firefighters,
telephone specialists, elec-
tricians, construction work-
ers, machinists, auto and
aircraft mechanics, and
other technicians.
ACTS carries on a regu-
lar peacetime program of
exchanging information on
technical skills and pro-
cedures between Israeli and
American workers.
Headed by Al Bazel of
Princeton, N.J., the group
has volunteer officers enlist-
ing in New York, Phila-
delphis, Washington and
Montreal, and expects to ex-
pand its facilities as new
headquarters are estab-
lished throughout Canada
and the United States.
Volume Provides Guidelines
for Modern Jewish Upbringing
The Bible says, -make it
known to your children, and
to your children's chil-
dren." Yet many Jewish
parents today encounter
serious difficulties in fulfill-
ing the age-old injunction
and present-day need to
strengthen their connection
to the Jewish past and,
through it, to the present.
Teaching their children
what it means to be Jewish
is perhaps life's greatest
challenge.
In his new book "To
Raise a Jewish Child"
(Basic Books), Rabbi
Hayim Halevy Donin squar-
ely confronts these and
other modern problems for
Jewish families. A coun-
selor for more than 20
years, Rabbi Donin is also
the author of "To Be A
Jew," an introduction to tra-
ditional Judaism. His new
work is a companion vol-
ume, written specifically
for parents who seek prac-
tical guidelines for helping
their children find meaning
and fulfillment in their Jew-
ish identity.
To Raise a Jewish Child"
defines the problems which
threaten the sanctity of the
Jewish home in today's
world, and then offers sensi-
-
tive, well-reasoned advice
on the crucial areas of fam-
ily life.
After outlining the ideal
parent-child relationship,
Rabbi Donin counsels on
how to reach it in the
home. Rabbi Donin shows
parents how to find and
evaluate a Hebrew school;
how to plan family obser-
vances in the home; how to
tap various educational re-
sources for Jewish families,
ranging from books and re-
cords to youth organiza-
tions, camps and study pro-
grams in Israel.
"To Raise a Jewish
Child" also provides par-
ents with actual cases from
Rabbi Donin's counseling
experience, illustrating how
they can best cope with dif-
ficult family situations
today.

Pre-State Israel
Shunned Kissinger
TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Ye-
diot Achronot reported that
Kibutz Yagru has a trads
school during the 30s whose
renown had reached Nazi
Germany. In 1936 a young
man sent an application
from Germany asking to be
accepted as a pupil at that
school. The kibutz rejected
the application and that
young man and his parents
emigrated to the United
States. That young man
was Henry Kissinger.
