Charges of racism and
anti-Semitism are being re-
jected by a bi-racial South-
field citizens group which
has begun a recall cam-
paign against five South-
field City Council members
who favor a senoir citizens-
low income housing apart-
ment building in the Tele-
graph Road - Civic Center
Dr. area.
Leaders of the citizens
group say they are not op-
posed to housing for either
s senior citizens or low in-
come families. John Fer-
nane, a leader of the group,
said the city is allowing the
two groups to be thrown to-
gether haphzardly, with no
planning for the future.
Mayor Donald Fracassi
had vetoed a zoning change
that would have allowed the
project. Last week the coun-
cil overrode the veto on a 5-
1 vote •s

The councilmen who fa-
vored the project are Step-
hen Cooper, Martin Hollan-
der,LillianJaffee, John Mar-
cosky and Jean McDonnell.
Councilman Philip Peterson
voted against it.
Rosemary Reed, a black
Southfield resident, also re-
jected the racism charge.
"The council has decided
Southfield will be a throw-
away city," she said. "This
will set a precedent that
will lead to the downfall of
Southfield as a middle class
community.
Mrs. Reed said concentra-
ting low income housing in
one area would depress
property values and acceler-
ate racial turnover.

mayor, and Cooper and Pe-
terson are up for re-elec-
