lion biggie and growing...In
the early 1950's, only a few
cents out of the food dollar
went for meals away from
home...Today, the figure is
about 30 cents...By 1980,
some experts claim it will
be 50 cents...The food-
service industry has under-
gone explosive growth at
the same time that a basic
shift was occuring in the
American way of life...
From late in the 1950's
until now, the number of
working wives has in-
creased by 80 per-
cent...There is more mobil-
ity, more disposable income
and greater lifestyle flex-
ibility...With all this plus
the rapid growth in franchis-
ing and fast food oper-
ations, eating out has be-
come a way of life.

HERE IN DETROIT,

when Tom Heller's musical
group, Sound Express,
grew to the size where a
van would no longer accom-
modate all the instruments,
the fellows decided to buy a
bus (4 buses to be
exact )...While in Toronto
playing a job, Tom compos
ed a billboard for the
SEMTA (Southeastern Mich-
igan Transit Authority) bus,
line and won first place out'
of 4,000 entries...The
prize?...A SEMTA bus for
the night and dinner for a
busload of friends.
HAL GORDON, orchestra
gent, played a recent par-
tial candlelight affair at the
Raleigh House...Due to a
storm, power failure caused
complete darkness for an
hour...and then the lights
came on.
But it was a very unique
party given by four
couples..: "just a social get-
together" for about 300
people...When the lights
went out, Hal played "Danc-
ing In The Dark", but no-
body got up-Ahey contin-
ued eating hors
- d'oeuvres...Then he played
"When The Lights Go On
Again" after the Raleigh
crew had done its candle-
light duty...and the lights
came back on.
DISA 'N DATA...Want to
know where to dine in
Japan?...Ask Ray Abrams,
who recently came back in
exultation about the fine din-
ing...Remember Lieb Rose-
nberg ?...He now owns his
own restaurant in Copenha-
gen, Denmark...Look him
up if going
there...Antoinette and Jim
Ney doing a good job at
their restaurant on
Telegraph (former Board-
walk )...Must be a reason
why the Golden Mushroom
on 10 Mile and Southfield
lot is always

crowded...Chef Nlilos, of
course, is quite a big fac-
tor...Want to take pounds
off your waist an easy
way ?...Ask Diana Berman,
who teaches belly dancing
at Oak Par lic
High... Customers who or4er
scrambled eggs with corned
beef in restaurants seldom
get it the way they
want...the corned beef
comes three ways,, sliced,
diced or chopped
fine...Many counter persons
don't know any other way
to make them but their

TEL AVIV (JTA)—
George Fernandes, Minister
of Communications in the
new Indian government.
has expressed confidence
that relations between Is-
rael and the Indian people
will strengthen. He made
that statement in a letter to
Histadrut Secretary Gener-
al Yeruham Meshel who
had congratualted him' ear-
lier on his appointment as a
minister in the New Delhi
government.
Fernandes, who heads a
small Socialist party in
India and is leader of the
railroad workers union
there, was imprisoned by
the Indira Ghandi regime
after a general strike by
railroad workers three
years ago. He and Meshel
met recently at a meeting
of the Secretariate of the
Asian regional organization
of the International Con-
federation of Free Trade
Unions.
