ryears...Today, it's an ave-
nue of go-go dancers, topl-
ess dancers and swarming
humanity being clipped left
and right...The Conrad
Drake, Palmer House,
Blackstone, Ambassador,
etc. are memories of a once
great Chicago...The Conrad
Hilton was originally built
as The Stevens in 1925 and
completed in 1927 as the
world's largest hotel (3,000
rooms) at a cost of over $27
million...It was renamed in
1951.
Plenty of people from De-
troit attended the restau-
rant convention...those we
saw were a small minority
of local attendees...Dieter
Boehm, Larry Sheehan, Vir-
gil' Ciungan, Ben Lutz, Sid
Mitchell, Oscar Bank, Al
Balooly, Mike Albert, Sam
Habib, Bud Sherbow, Bob
Jacobs, Herman Fortner,
Al Winkler, Dave Margolis,
Mark Kramer, Paul Meyer,
Hugh Potieker, Steve
Zacks, Joyce and Bob Rose-
nberg...Many many more
were there from Detroit,
but we 'didn't , bump into
them.
Jottings...Joyce and Bob
Rosenberg now own a de-
licatessen called David's
Deli, in the Los Arco's Mall
in Scottsdale ;- Ariz...Chef
Sam Habib, now at a spot
outside Toronto, may re-
turn to a Detroit eat-
ery...Sol Tulkoff- takes his
Tiger- Horseradish and Bar-
B-Q Sauce name to
heart...At the Restaurant
show he wore a striped tie
and matching striped jack-
et a la his Tiger products...
It's evidently okay to use
the term "kosher style" on
menus in Chicago...saw it
at a number of places even
though the phrase means ab-
solutely nothing...Smallest
alley in the world is on
Rush St. to get to a spot
called The Back Room (at
least it looked like an
alley)...Americans today
are eating more fish out...A
recent National Restaurant
Associaiton study confirms
a 50 percent increase in fish
ordered out—largest gain of
any entree...Reasons prob-
ably are that people are
looking for variety and nu-
trition without calories...
Restaurant show was 58th
annual, representing the $80
billion food industry, and ex-
pected to draw 100,000 vis-
itors to six miles of booth
space occupied by 1,000 ex-
hibitors...More than eight
million employees make up
the f o o d in-
dustry...providing more
jobs for.more people than
any other retail sector.
We just had to go to Don
Roth's Blackhawk for din-
ner one night...The spot on
Wabash was opened in 1920
and soon became a Chicago
institution for fine food with
relaxed dining in a cordial
atmosphere...For the first
25 years, it was the home of
great orchestras broad-
casting from coast to
coast...But since 1952, it
hasn't had music or enter-
tainment...It is still beauti-
ful • and the food
good...Service however, is
quite different...Our unsmil-
ing, mechanical-type waiter
was slightly arro-
gant...although one of the
captains did change our
four-top table to a place
where six people could
sit...No doubt this rather
than have us eat on the
floor.
However, places like the
Blackhawk are geared for
conventioneers now...Those
who know Chicago well go
to favorite spots that out-of-
towners don't know
about...like Tel Aviv Kosher
Pizza on N. California, with
whole or by-the-slice pizza
plus Middle East food and
delicious cauliflower lightly
breaded and deep-
fried...The Bagel Restau-
rant on N. Kedzie with its
whitefish boiled with onions
and carrots and stuffed
with gefilte • fish...Askey's
on W. Morse for delicious
Hungarian goulash...
Ghisela's on N. Wells
with its excellent 'Roma-
nian food...Greek Islands on
W. Jackson, inexpensive
and among the best Greek
eateries in town...Le Bor-
deaux, the Loop's only
French, restaurant, in base-
ment on W. Madison St.—
French all the way...or a
very authentic Kiyo's on N.
Clark for tops in Japanese
cuisine.
