NO THANKS TO the cab
drivers in Chicago, we're
back home safe and sound
from the National Restau-
rant Association
show...They drive like
they're at the Indianapolis
500 Speedway, trying to see
who can out-inch who...And
don't complain about the
dirty, rickety cabs without
shocks...Like one guy lee-
ringly told us, they don't
own the cabs themselves,
so why take care of
them... Besides, Chicago
law says the cabs have to
be changed every three
years anyway... Whoever.
heard of buying a former
Chicago cab in good condi-
tion?
Amazing the amount of
people who attend the Na-
tional Restaurant show at
McCormick Place...Even
more amazing is their ac-
x ceptance of the hotel accom-
modations this big city has
to offer at most of
them...The ones that used
to be lavish, beautiful edi-
fices of yesteryears, are

nothing more nowadays
than overgrown flophouses
that you pay through the
nose for...The rooms are
small, old and dilapi-
dated...To bad, because the
nostalgia of yesteryears
brings memories ever fond.
The room we had at the
Conrad Hilton was so small
you're almost out of it if
you walk too fast after en-
tering...The air conditioning
didn't work...television was
conked out and our feet
hung over the bed (they
couldn't have gotten in a
larger bed any-
way)...There's no use com-
plaining...everyday is con-
vention day in Chicago, and
they could care less about
You, it seems.
The only things going for
the Conrad Hilton is • a
large, spacious lobby (we
should have slept there),
beautiful memories, clean-
liness and a good reputa-
tion...The prices are much
too high...Then again, every-
thing in Chicago during the
convention is at rip-off
level...A convention town
that "takes" those who
come there doesn't 'care
one way or another for the
people.
Those who attend the Chi-
cago restaurant show are di-
vided into cate-
gories...Restaurant owners
and chefs, suppliers, exhib-
itors, interested personnel,
the press like ourselves and
visitors who go to taste or
sample some of the free
food...You can't imagine
how folks line up to get
something free... regardless
of what it is...from the lit-
tlest snack.
One woman carrying a
bag around, was putting
food samples in it and
every so often reached in
whenever she felt like eat-
ing something, which was
almost always...In the
Vienna booth, a fellow was
slicing hot dogs and people
were gulping them up as if
they were the last morsel
of food 'on earth.
The restaurant show
serves good purposes...It
provides the restaurateur
with knowledgeable infor-
mation and what's new in
the world of eating and
drinking...It gives exhib-
itors an opportunity to show -
off their wares...But accord-
ing to some restaurant
gents who go every year to
the show in Chicago, it
needs much updating...Most
exhibits are usually the
'same, without any imagina-
tion.
Like all other conven-
tions, the restaurant show
in Chicago gives people a
chance to get away...Some
men bring their wives for
what they consider a vaca-
tion and Chicago takes ad-
vantage of these with the
exorbitant prices at restau-
rants, hotels and little night
spots (especially Rush St.,
which should be renamed
El Cl:ppo St.)...Too bad this
isn't controlled as gambling
is in Las Vegas.
But Chicago is a town
with fond memories...Rush
St. today is a far, far cry
from the Rush St. of yeste-
