Historian Lashes Nazi 'Whitewash'
LOS ANGELES—A noted
historian lashed out at
"revisionist writers - who
"whitewash the Nazi years
and claim that Hitler was
really Mr. Nice Guy."
Addressing a luncheon
session of the Anti-Defama-
tion League of Bnai Brith
national executive com-
mittee meeting on Sunday,
Dr. Robert G. L. Waite, pro-
fessor of history at Wil-
liams College and a special-
ist in German history for 30
years, called efforts to "de-
demonize - Hitler and the
Nazi era "defamation of
both the victims of the
Holocaust and of historical
scholarship."
He centered his remarks
on a recently published

David Irving, which con-
tends that Hitler did not
order the massacre of the
Jews and did not even know
about it until late in 1944.
Prof. Waite said the Irving
work, "Hitler's War, - is a
"pernicious perversion of
history."
He also included in that
category a book which
caused a furor earlier this
year—"The Hoax of the
Twentieth Century," by
Northwestern University
professor Arthur Butz. The
Butz book contends that the
Nazi extermination of six
million Jews was a myth
propagated by the Jews
themselves.
The historian noted that
David Irving has appeared
nationally on radio and tele-
vision interview programs
and has received wide-
spread newspaper and
-magazine coverage for his
thesis that Hitler was in-
nocent.
Impossible, - Prof.
Waite said. It was Hitler,
and Hitler alone, who gave
the order for the extermina-
tion of the Jews...No one
else in the Third Reich had
the authority to give an
order to murder over six
million people...and no sub-
ordinate would have dared
carry out such a program
without the explicit order of
the fuehrer. Even the meth-
od of the murders was in
line with Hitler's personal
infatuation with ihygiene,
filth. stench, putrefaction
and strangulation."
He went on to say that
the archives of a Munich in-
stitute document the depth
and intensity of Hitler's ha-
tred of the Jews as far
back as 1922. At that time,
Hitler said: "As soon as I
have the power, I shall
have gallows erected, for
example in Munich in the
Marienplatz...Jews will be

hanged one after another,
and they will stay hanging
until they stink. They will
stay hanging as long as hy-
gienically possible.
"As soon as they are un-
tied, the next group will fol-
low and that will continue
until the last Jew in Munich
is exterminated. The exact
same procedure will be fol-
lowed in other cities until
Germany is cleansed of the
last Jew."
The historian, whose book
"The Psychopathic God:
Adolf Hitler" will be pub-
lished next month by Basic
Books, said his study of Hit-
ler's life and career reveals
that hatred of the Jews and
determination to destroy
them "obsessed Hitler's pri-
vate life and became the
guts of his public policy. -
He added that Hitler was
"infatuated with death." Ac-
cording to Professor Waite,
Hitler had a "divided
psyche - -his aggression
stemmed from "private
fears of inadequacy and im-
potence. -
Prof. Waite said that the
danger of the Butz and Ir-
ving books is the veneer of
scholarship attached to
both—Butz because of his
affiliation with North-
western and Irving because
he is a known author and
his book has been published
by a respected American
firm.
"But both books." he con-
tinued, "are wrong and no
better than the Holocaust
revisionist works written
and disseminated over the
past 10 years by anti-Jew-
ish extremists in America
and abroad. Indeed, the
Butz book is already being
promoted by the American
Nazi Party and other anti-
Semitic factions; the Irving
book will most likely also
be adopted by such
groups. -
CJCongress Head Believes
Anxiety Besets Quebec Jews
MONTREAL (JTA)-
Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut,
the newly-elected president
of the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress, said last week that
While the chief concern of
Canadian' Jewry was once
with the survival of Eu-
ropean Jewry it is now fo-
cussed on communities with-
in its own midst.
"It is no longer secret
that deep anxiety besets
our people in Quebec, one
of The finest and most com-
mitted Jewish communities
in the Diaspora," Plaut said
in an interview after he
was elected president at the
CJC's 18th plenary meeting.
"In accepting the presi-
dency of the Congress at
this crucial time—as one
who knew French before he
knew English—I have a
deep appreciation of the as-
pirations of the Quebecois
for cultural identity," the
Toronto Reform rabbi
stressed.
"But, on the other hand,
an equally deep resolve is
that Jewish identity, too,
needs safeguarding," he
continued. "Jews can find
full expression only in a so-
ciety that is free and accept-
ing of differences, is not
coercive and which will
staunchly defend the integri-
ty of all existing education-
al'and social institutions."
Strikers Return to Service Jobs
NEW YORK (JTA)—The
450 unionized employees
locked out on April 19 by 20
Ys and Jewish community
centers in the Greater New
York area returned to their
jobs Wednesday after ap-
proving a new two-year con-
tract, a spokesman for Dis-
trict Council 1707 said.
But a strike by the same
union against seven Jewish
social agencies, also affil-
iated with the Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies, con-
tinued, with no break in
sight, the spokesman said.
