Lou Gordon, Staunch Supporter of Israel, Battled Bias, Injustice

Lou Gordon, whose tack-
ling of major issues in his
television programs gave
him a national reputation
for fearlessness, was a
staunch supporter of Israel.
His death on Monday,. at
the age of 60, left a deep
void in the ranks of Israel's
defenders.
He frequently referred to

LOU GORDON

his Jewishness with a sense
of loyalty to his traditional
legacies. He had an Ortho-
dox upbringing, his reli-
gious training was in
Shaarey Zedek, dating back
to the spiritual guidance of
Rabbi A. M. Hershman,
and he retained a knowl-
edge of his early Hebraic
training.
At a recent dinner at
Cong. Beth Achim he re-
cited a lengthy Scriptural
quotation, giving it sub-
stance with an inter-
pretation.
Thus he followed in the
footsteps of his father, the
late Abraham Gordon, who
was the founder of the
Shaarey Zedek Junior Con-
gregation and its guide for
many years. His elder
brother, Rabbi Albert Gor-
don of Sioux City, Iowa, has
a leadership role in Reform
Jewish ranks. His younger
brother, Milton, is a promi-
nent California Democratic
leader, having been named
four years ago by his party
to be its candidate for Cali-
fornia State Treasurer.
Mr. Gordon had befriend-
ed the late Drew Pearson

during his newspaper ca-
reer in Washington. His ad-
miration for the noted col-
umnist developed into his
own search for truth in po-
litical and social affairs of
the state and the nation.
Mr Gordon's talk show,
aired Saturday and Sunday
evenings on WKBD-TV,
Channel 50, was syndicated
in 1971. It was carried in
Philadelphia, Boston, Chi-
cago, Cleveland, Miami,
San Francisco and Los An-
geles.
A graduate of the Detroit
Public- Schools, Mr. Gordon
attended the University of
Michigan for one term,1933- .
34. He quit college to be-
come an insurance agent,
enlisted in the Air Cadets"
during World War II,
worked for the Booth news-
paper chain and was a cloth-
ing manufacturer's repre-
sentative.
Preferring politics to the
sales grind, Mr. Gordon
joined WXYZ radio as a
commentator in 1957, where
he had a five-nights-a-week
program. He later made
television appearances on
WXYZ. He joined WKBD-
TV in 1965.
Mr. Gordon was known
for his fiery inquisitive
style. His program was
watched closely by politi-,
cians whom he was known
to help make or break.
A case in point involves
the famous "brainwash-
ing" remark by former
Michigan Governor George
Romney. Romney _appeared
on the Gordon show for an
interview, and Gordon de-
cided that the "brainwash-
ing" statement was the
most attention-catching
item of the talk. He called
the New York Times report-
er in Detroit who in turn
used that item to headline
the story which was picked
up by the television net-
works. According to Theo-
dore White's "The Making
of the President-1968,"
this incident was most detri-
mental to Romney's quest
for the presidency.

the underdog. He criticized

increase requests and led
an entourage to Lansing to
present 7,000 letters protest-
ing the rate hike to Gover-

-

nor Milliken and the chair-.
man of the state Public
Service Commission.
