Labor Jumps on Likud Friedman Proposal

_

(–

(Continued From Page 1)
some fear by Labor that its
longtime hegemony in the
Histadrut would also be
shattered by Likud in the
June 21 election for the Gen-
eral Trade Federation. But
now the proposal regarding
Friedman, especially in
light of the conservative
American Economist's
views that Israel needs to
increase unemployment to
combat its ever-growing in-
flation, has given Labor an
issue which it believes it
can use in the Histadrut

_ _hrlich, an economist
who is slated to become fi-
nance minister in the new -
government, said that he
proposed Friedman because
the economist's views are
close to those of Likud.
Ehrlich and Yehezkel Flu-
min, another Likud econom-
ics spokesman, said that
Friedman's appointment
would also demonstrate
that Israel did not only look
to world Jewry only for fi-
nancial support but was
also willing to turn to promi-
nent Jewish personalities
for advice.
Friedman has confirmed
to Israeli newsmen that he
is willing to be an adviser
to the government. He told
them that he believes in-
flation cam be reduced by

partial unemployment, cuts
in government spending
and decreasing government
involvement in industry, in-
cluding handling over cer-
tain government companies
to private industry.
Meir Tzaban of the left-
wing Sheli movement imme-
diately called for a meeting
of the Histadrut Executive
to discuss Friedman's rec-
ommendations on unemploy-
ment. The left-wing group
also noted that Friedman
was an adviser to the Chi-
lean Junta. (Friedman, in a
recent letter in the New
York Times denied this alle-
gation.)

Study Proposes
Safe Arms Lift

348 Lay Leaders
Serve the Military

NEW YORK (ZINS) — A
Congressional study has pro-
posed that Congress consid-
er the development of a
self-sufficient United States
airlift to supply and support
American and other forces,
including Israel, in the
event of another Mideast
war.

NEW YORK (JTA)—
There are 348 Jewish mili-
tary lay leaders who serve
military congregations be-
tween visits of active duty.
Jewish chaplains help pro-
vide religious coverage, in-
crease congregational par-
ticipation and promote Jew-
ish religious education in
the military setting, a ca-
reer development institute
for Jewish chaplains here
was told.
It was also announced
that the five U.S. military
academies will graduate
and commission 24 Jewish
officers this spring. In addi-
tion, Jonathon Klein of Yon-
kers will graduate from Ye-
shiva University with
honors and pursue a U.S.
Army commission through
the Reserve Officers Train-
ing Program.
He is the first student in
the 91-year history of Ye-
shiva University to pursue
an Army commission.

The study urges using ad-
vanced tanker cargo air-
craft — 747 or DC-10 long-
range wide-bodied com-
mercial jets known as the
ATCA modified as cargo
transport or aerial tankers
in conjunction with the Air
Force's c-141 and C-5A
long-range transports. By
doing so, the U.S. would be
able to avoid calling on
others to assist supply mis-
sions they might oppose for
political reasons.

White House Quiet
on Jewish Issues?

WASHINGTON (ZINS)-
Dan Margalit, Washington
correspondent for the Hebr-
/ 7 daily, Ha'aretz, report-
recently that there is
concern among lobbyists
for Israel that close con-
tacts with the White House
are becoming fewer and far
between.
Margalit cited as exam-
ples of his theory unan-
swered invitations extended
to government officials, in-
cluding Vice President Wal-
ter Mondale and national
security adviser, Zbigniew
Brzezinski. He also said the
lobbzists felt that Carter's
adviser on Jewish affairs,
Robert Lipshutz, was not
putting forth all the effort
he could where "Jewish
questions" were involved.

Histadrut • leaders also
stressed that they would
not allow Friedman's views
on unemployment to be ap-
plied in Israel. This brought
a statement from David
Levy, Likud's candidate for
Histadrut secretary general
that a Likud-led Histadrut
will not allow increased
unemployment and will not
allow the government to
abolish the cost of living al-
lowances or to abolish sub-
sidies to essential com-
modities.
Likud said that Friedman
would work with Israeli
economists. It said he
would give advice and that
the decisions will be made

Michigan's estimated pop-
ulation is 9,098,000, accord-
ing to the U.S. census.

by the Likud leadership in
the government in coopera-
tion with the Likud facton
in the Histadrut.
