Affirmative Action
Shown Opposition

NEW YORK—An over-
whelming majority of Amer-
icans believe that reverse
discrimination (affirmative
action) should not be used
in hiring people or determin-
ing admission to college, ac-
cording to the latest Gallup
Poll.
Seldom before have the
American people been in
such agreement on a con-
troversial issue, the poll re-
ported. Over all, 83 percent
of the 1,550 adults inter-
viewed in the survey said
that preferential treatment
should not be given to
women or minority groups;
10 percent said it should be
given and 7 percent had no
opinion.
A total of 64 percent of
nonwhite participants in the
pool said they back the idea
of making ability alone as
determined by tests the
basis for hiring and college
entrance.

Beef Short Ribs

You might be interested
in this as an inexpensive
main dish. Remember,
though, that you must pre-
pare it one day ahead of
time so that the fat can be
removed. The flavor is bet-
ter when reheated, anyway.

3 lbs. meaty beef short ribs
1 /2 small green pepper,
diced
2 medium onions, diced
1 clove garlic, chopped
11/2 cups hot water
small bay leaf
1 /4 cup cider vinegar,
6 tbsps. brown sugar
1 /2 cup catsup
Brown ribs in a heavy
dutch oven. Then brown
green pepper, onion and
garlic. Add remaining in-
gredients. Cover pot and
cook over a low heat about
two hours. Refrigerate and
remove fat from top before
reheating. Heat covered
about 1/2 hour or until meat
is hot and tender. Serves
