Jewish Traditional wedding ceremonies have the bride walk around the groom before the ceremony begins. Some traditions require this prac- tice seven times. Others re- quire it only three times. Those who require three cir- cuits give a variety of reasons. One is that the Bible (Deuteronomy: 22, 24) cites three cases starting with the language "If a man takes unto himself a wife . . ." The cases are conse- quences of marriage that might be problems. Tlius. this ceremony indicates the seriousness with which the couple ought to approach the marriage in order to avoid three main problems. A second explanation for the three circuits is the three times which the prophet Hosea proclaimed that the Almighty declared He will betroth the Jewish people, i.e.,in righteousness, justice and loving-kindness (Hosea 2:21). The three circuits would then represent these three indispensible virtues in marriage. Others say the three cir- cuits represent the three methods 'by which marriage is legally con- secrated (Kiddushin 2a) i.e. the token (the ring), a contract and personal relations. Some writers indicate the seven circuits represent the seven circuits around the wall of Jericho indicating the first victory of the Israelites in the promised land. Before leaving for Israel, Facio had been inscribed in JNF's Golden Book by Israeli Ambassa- dor Hanan Olami and local Jewish leaders. groom, then, represents the union of the people of Israel with the Holy Land. Others claim that the seven circuits indicate the seven days of creation meaning that a new world is being created by this marriage. It is also claimed that the seven circuits represent the three Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) and the four matriarchs (Sarah, Rebec- ca, Rachel and Leah), meaning that the bride and groom are like the original matriarchs and patriarchs of the Jewish faith. Some claim . that the cir- cuit as a whole is to stress the fact that the groom should be ever attentive and mindful of his beloved wherever he goes and wherever he turns.
