50th Anniversary of Lindbergh Solo Flight
Recalls Anti-Semitic America First Speech
, 71
Charles A. Lindbergh's
anti-Semitism is an in-
erasable blight on his re-
cord.
As the 50th anniversary
of his solo flight in "The
Spirit of St. Louis, - his mon-
oplane, was celebrated on
May 20, the record of his
pro-Nazism was not ig-
nored.
The story was told in the
New York Times Magazine
Section, in its issue of May
8, quoted from a Lindbergh
speech at an America First
rally in Des Moines, Iowa,
Sept. 11, 1941:
". . . The three most im-
portant groups who have
been pressing this country
toward war are the British,
the Jewish, and the Roose-
velt Administration. (Ap-
plause.)

CHARLES LINDBERG
"Behind these groups, but
of lesser importance', are a
number of capitalists, Ang-
lophiles, and intellectuals
who believe that their fu-
ture and the future of man-
kind depends upon the do-
mination of the British Em-
pire. Add these to the Corn-
muhistic groups who were
opposed to intervention
until a few weeks ago, and
I believe I have named the
major war agitators in this
country.
Michael Gaines
"The second major group
I mentioned is the Jewish.
It is not difficult to under-
stand why Jewish people de-
sire the overthrow of - Nazi
Germany. The persecution
they suffered in Germany
would be sufficient to make
bitter enemies of any race.
No person with a sense of
dignity of mankind can con-
done the persecution the
Jew race suffered in Ger-
many. But no person of hon-
esty and vision can look
upon their prowar policy
here today without seeing
the dangers involved in
such a policy both for us
and for them. . . .
"A few foresighted Jew-
ish people realize this and
stand opposed to inter-
vention, but the majority
still do not. Their greatest
danger to this country 'lies
in their large ownership
and influence in our motion
pictures, our press, our
radio and our Government.
"I am not attacking ei-
ther the Jewish or the Brit-
ish people. Both races I ad-
mire. But I am saying that
the leaders of both the Brit-
ish and the Jewish races,
for reasons which are as un-
derstandable from their
viewpoints as they are inad-
visable from ours, for rea-
sons which are not Ameri-
can, wish to involve us in
the war." (Applause).

NEW YORK (JTA)—
Talks are continuing be-
tween the office of Gov.
Hugh Carey and James
Kelly, acting chancellor of
the State University of New
York, over the decisions of
officials of the State Univer-
sity (SUNY) at Buffalo to
hold classes next fall during
Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur, a spokesman for
the governor said.
The spodesman empha-
sized that the governor has
no control over the calen-
dars of the schools of
SUNY, which is independ-
ent of the state executive
but that the governor was
"concerned."
Jewish students at Buf-
falo reportedly are protest-
ing the administration's re-
fusal to cancel classes on
the High Holy Days be-
cause it is a school policy
to be closed on Christmas
and Easter, and they consid-
er the school policy discrim-
inatory.
