NEW YORK—The Ameri-
can Jewish Committee corn-
mended eight U.S. corpo-
rations "for outstanding ef-
forts in a cooperative pro-
gram to recruit and
promote Jewish personnel
in management positions on
the basis of merit." The an-
nouncement was made at a
session of the Committee's
71st annual meeting last
weekend.
The companies named
are American Telephone
and Telegraph Co:, AT&T
Long Lines, Bankers Trust
Co., ' Equitable Life Assur-
ance Society of the United
States, Kennecott Copper
Corp., Nabisco Inc.,. Sav-
ings Banks Association of
New York State, and West-
em Electric Co.
In a statement hailing the
companies' actions, George
Karp pointed out that

though there had been
many other companies with
which successful dis-
cussions had taken place,
the eight that were cited
had compiled particularly
noteworthy records in car-
rying out positive programs
of recruitment and advance-
ment of Jews on a merit
basis.
"At no time," Karp de-
clared, "have we ever
asked for quotas to be estab-
lished or numerical goals to
be set. What" we have
sought, and the programs
that these major corpo-
rations have set in motion,
are policies of non-discrimi-
natory recruitment and the
maximum utilization of
management personnel on
the basis of ability alone.

overt or covert discrimina-

Aliya Association Reorganizes
Focuses on American Olim

NEW YORK (JTA)—
Newly organized and with a
new name, the North Ameri-
can Aliya Movement (for-
_merly the Association of
Americans and Canadians
for Aliya) is looking toward
playing a major role in help-
ing American Jews to emi-
grate to Israel.

.

"We hope that NAAM
will become the umbrella
organization for aliya in
North America, to which all
other aliya organizations in
the United States, Canada
and Mexico come for infor-
mation and programmatic
support which they them-
selves cannot provide," Dr.
Sam A. Lehman-Wilzig, the
newly elected president of
NAAM, and its executive di-
rector Harvey G. Harth,
said.

,

They said that the recent
annual national convention
of their organization, held
in Pikesville, Md., was a
turning point in the history
of the movement, which
was founded in 1967, be-
cause for the first time a
constitution was adopted
and an executive board was
elected.

According to Wilzig and
Harth, NAAM's strength is
in the fact that American
Jews approach other Ameri-
can Jews to go on aliya.
"We are the only organiza-
tion that deals exclusively
with aliya," Wilzig said.
"As Americans we have bet-
ter ability to communicate
with Americans who consid-
er aliya." •

Harth and Wilzig said
that they themselves will
be going on aliya "in the
next two or three years."
They added that all mem-
bers of NAAM—about 2,000
at present—are committed
to aliya.

The two leaders empha-
sized the non-ideological
character of NAAM. "We
are firmly committed to en-
suring that NAAM will not 1
-bes-e—spokesman for any
single ideological or politi-
cal perspective, Wilzig said.
In order to attract more
potential olim, NAAM is

planning to launch a public
relations campaign shortly
which will include advertise-
ments -in Jewish news-
papers, lectures and distrl-
bution of posters. Wilzig
and Harth also said that a
special- program will be
launched to attract mem,'
bers of Jewish youth grouPs

Israel.

are now in the process of
being removed as a result
of deliberate policy decision
by top management."
During the meetings the
AJCommittee announced
the election of Richard
Maas of White Plains, N.Y.,
as its 17th president. Max
M. Fisher of Detroit was
re-elected honorary chair-
man of the national execu-
tive council.
Dr. Morton K. Blaustein,
chairman-elect of the coun-
cil, announced the estab-
lishment of the Hilda Katz
Blaustein Leadership Devel-
opment Program to develop
leaders for the AJCor ti
mittee.
