David, Evelyn Zack Forest to Be Initiated at JNF Tribute

Fund testimonial dinner
honoring the couple June 22

American Bicentennial Na-

tional Park in Israel, plan-
ted under the auspices of
the JNF.

being honored for their
services and contributions
to the Detroit Jewish com-
munity and to Israel. - Zack
was president of JNF and
has been active in commu-

nal and civic affairs for
nearly 50 years.

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA)—The United Nations
Economic and Social Coun-
cil approved a resolution
which endorsed a report by
the UN Human Rights Com-
mission accusing Israel of
mistreatment of the Arabs
in the administered terri-
tories.
The vote was 34-2, with
the United States and Can-
ada opposing the resolution,
and 12 abstaining. The ab-
staining votes were cast by
the Western nations on the
council.
Two unexpected votes sup-
porting the criticism of Is-
rael were those of Portugal,
which indicated it will estab-
lish diplomatic ties with Is-
rael, and Mexico, which
has been assuring Israel of
its support in the UN after
voting for the resolution
equating Zionism with rac-
ism.
The resolution, sponsored
by Egypt, Syria and Jor-
dan, "commended" the
human rights commission
for "the action taken in con-
nection with the protection
of human rights in the occu-

ROCHESTER, N.Y.
(JTA)—The president of
254-family Temple Sinai, a
Reform synagogue, has de-
scribed as "totally in-
correct" the belief of "a sig-
nificant number of our con-
gregants and the commu-
nity at large - that
membership was closed at
300 families and that there
was a waiting list for en-
trance to the synagogue's
religious school.
Nat Rubin said the reason
for the growth policy was
"not to create an exclusive
country club but to enable
us to properly assimilate
the new members." He said
75 of the new members—al-
most a quarter of the mem-
bership—joined in the past
two years.

Office in Canada

OTTAWA (jTA)—Allan
E. Gottlieb, deputy minister
of manpower and immigra-
tion for several years, was
appointed as under-
secretary of state for exter-
nal affairs, the second high-
est post in the ministry. He
joined the Canadian foreign
service in 1957.
In June. 1967 he was ap-
pointed assistant under-
secretary of state for exter-
nal affairs and legal advis-
er.

norities, the detention with-
out trials, and the arrest
and tortures of dissidents
taking place throughout the
world."
Herzog said the "absur-
dity of singling out Israel"
over conditions in Israeli
prisons was made clear by
the fact that Israel permits
regular visits to prisoners
by the International Red
Cross and by its recent in-
vitation to the International
League for Human Rights
"to inspect conditions in Is-
rael's prisons."
He challenged the spon-
sors of "this hypocritical
resolution to extend the
same invitation for inter-
national inspection of their
own prisons."
