Senate Committee May Probe Uranium Thought to Be in Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA )-
Reports that a cargo of ura-
nium disappeared at sea
nine years ago and suppos-
edly ended up in Israel may
be the ubject of inquiries by
the Senate Select Com-
mittee on Intelligence.

Capitol sources said that
the committee. chaired by
Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-
Hawaii). is to request de-
tails from the U.S. Energy
Research and Development
Agency (ERDA) which, ac-
cording to the sources, is
the "concerned" govern-
ment agency involved in
such matters.
The matter also may
arise in the Subcommittee
on Energy. Nuclear Pro-
liferation and Federal Serv-

ices, chaired by Seri. John
Glenn (D-Ohio) which is
conducting hearings on
other subjects. That panel
is part of the Senate Gov-
ernment Operations Com-
mittee headed by Sen. Abra-
ham Ribicoff (D-Conn.).
However, there appears
to be a tendency both at the
Capitol and within the Ad-
ministration to play down
the alleged incident as
being of slight significance
since both the uranium
cargo and the ship said to
have carried it were Eu-
ropean.
The story surfaced just as
the Carter Administration
was presenting legislation
to Congress to tighten con-
trols on nuclear material
for export and shortly be-
fore a meeting on uranium
controls in London this
week to be attended by
President Carter. But Ad-
ministration officials denied
speculation that it - might
have been a deliberate leak
to bolster the Adminis-
tration's move to tighten
controls.
An unidentified CIA offi-

cial was reported as saying
that the CIA knew of the in-
cident. "We know the ship
vanished and that was the
end of it for us" because
"the ship was not Ameri-
can. The cargo was not
American."
According to the in-
telligence sources. the ves-
sel, flying the West German
flag. sailed from Antwerp
in 1968 for Genoa, Italy
with 20 tons of uranium
ore. It called at Rotterdam
but never reached its desti-
nation. The ship is said to
have reappeared a few-
weeks later with a new
name. a new registry, a
new crew and no uranium.
Intelligence sources be-
lieve the material was un-
loaded in Israel. Israel's
atomic energy department
said Israel had no con-
nection with the alleged dis-
appearance of the uranium.
In the meantime, reports
indicate the European Com-
mon Market has beefed up
controls on nuclear ship-
ments since news of the
1968 loss of uranium sur-
faced.

A CENTURY OLD TRADITION

TEL AVIV—Deep in the
Negev Desert, 35 kms away
from Eilat, there is a new
kibutz which has introduced
a revolutionary system. Its
name is Somar. It was
founded a year ago by mem-
bers of Hashomer Hatzair.
It is a kibutz without a
secretary, without a work
distributor and without
hired labor. Each member
is responsible for his own
job and does not wait for
orders from the work dis-
tributor. There is no hunt
for money. Whoever needs
some money, has the key to
the cash, takes out what-
ever he needs and only reg-

Under the supervision of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis':

isters how much and for
what purpose.
The kibutz has two
trucks. Whoever needs
them, uses them. All mem-
bers work 10 to 12 hours a
day, without orders. The ki-
butz grows tomatoes for ex-
port.
Members of kibutzim in
the vicinity scoff at the
young members of Somar
and their modern work and
administration methods.
"They are naive and with-
out experience" old kibutz-
members say.
The members of Somar
maintain, that they wish to
create "something new"
and not imitate the meth-
ods of the old kibutzim.
In Kibutz Somar are two
groups: Among the 20 found-
ers, the majority were
members of kibutzim. The
second group, about 60
members, come from Tel
Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and
other places after their mili-
tary service.
A total of 60 apartments
were built in the kibutz.
Others will be completed
during the year. A new din-
ing hall, a library and a
club for social and cultural
events are being built.
The members of the ki-
butz wish to stop receiving
support from the Sochnut
and state institutions. They
decided to depend on sav-
ings from the expenses of
each member. -

Brazil Ends
Bormann Search

BONN—The Brazilian gov-
ernment announced this
week that it was giving up
the search for the most
hunted Nazi war criminal.
Martin Bormann. Brazil's
attorney general said the
Supreme Court shelved
West Germany's 1967
request for Bormann's ex-
tradition because there was
no evidence he was in the
country.
