Drops Ban on Sale of Kfirs U.S. VIENNA (JTA)—The United States dropped objec- tions against sales of Israel fighter plans to Austria, but. Austrian autorities have not yet made up their minds whether they really want them. Government sources said the U.S. National Security Council indicated it was pre- pared to lift a ban of sales of Israeli-made Kfir fight- ers to the army of neutral Austria. U.S. authorities up to now, stopped all sales of Kfir planes abroad because they contained highly sophisticated U.S. made equipment. However, Austria was not sure whether it should ac- cept the offer. The Austrian army wants to buy 20 new fighter planes to defend its air space more efficiently. The Kfir planes—after ex- tensive tests—were consid- ered the best choice. - However, government offi- cials indicated they were af- raid the purchase of Israeli planes may deteriorate poli- tical and trade relations with Arab countries. Zarmi Resigns Labor Party Post TEL AVIV (JTA)—Meir Zarmi resigned as secre- tary general of the Labor Party after accusing party leader Shimon Peres of un- dermining his position. In his letter to Peres, Zarmi said that he ould not continue to function as long as he was excluded from party forums and deliber- ations and his counsel was unsought or ignored. Zarmi also said he w hurt when he read in newspaper interview with Peres that the Defense Min- ister, who assumed the duties of premier last month, would designate Uzzi l3aram the Labor Party's next Secretary Gen- eral. Zarmi said that he could not remain in his post until after the Histadrut elec- tions in June. He said he was surprised to read that Peres had selected a succes- sor without consulting him.
