WASHINGTON (JTA)—
An Episcopal priest who is
also a journalist has
charged that it is "simply
untrue" that National Coun-
cil of Churches (NCC) has
removed Romanian Arch-
bishop Valerian Trifa from
its directorate.
The Rev. Lester Kinsolv-
ing, a religion columnist
and broadcaster fromWash-
ington, said the historic
and monumental scandal of
a Nazi war criminal among
the directors - of the NCC
continues.. "Trifa who is

by the Department of Jus-
tice for lying to obtain citi-
zenship, is still a member

agency, - he said.

ferred a clear-cut decision
of formal suspension of this
Nazi commandment, the
NCC did actively move with-
in a period of four months,
to bring about the de facto
suspension of Trifa by his
own sponsoring body. - Kin-
solving said Tannenbaum
told him that this was the
"easy way out."
In New York, Tan-
nenbaum said that the AJ-
Committee still considers
Trifa's membership on the
NCC Board a "moral out-
rage." But he rejected Kin-
solving's contention that
Trifa could participate on
the NCC board noting that
if the Michigan Archbishop
were to try to attend the
Cincinnati meetings he
would not be permitted- to
do so.
However, Tannenbaum
said the AJCommittee still
would like to see the NCC of-
ficially suspend Trifa from
any role in the organization
and sent a representative to
the Cincinnati meeting in
an effort to convince the
group to take such action. •
Tannenbaum said, "The
real issue is to get this- guy
and other Nazis out of the
country. And that is where
we are concentrating our ef-
forts. - Tannenbaum noted
that he was in Detroit re-
cently to meet with Justice
Department officials on
how to expedite the legal
proceedings against Trifa.

Artukovic Ouster
Still Is Sought

WASHINGTON (JTA)-

The U.S. Immigration and
Naturalization Service
(INS) has started fresh de-
portation proceedings
against Andrija Artukovic,
the former Croation Nazi
wanted in Yugoslavia on
charges of killing thousands
of Serbs, Jews and gypsies,
but the chances are slim
that he ever will be de-
ported.
Artukovic, who lives in
Seal Beach, Calif., has been
successfully resisting depor-
tation for more than 20
years by claiming he would
be politically persecuted if
returned to Yugoslavia.
In its latest action, the
INS has given him until
May 25, to justify the contin-
uation of his stay in the
United States. However.
and INS official acknowledg-
ed that this is only the be-
ginning step in a deporta-
tion process and he can file
numerous appeals within
INS to prevent deportation
and then go to the courts
again cif he wishes to stay
the proceedings. Artukovic
is now 76.

Synagogue Ruined.
Youths Guilty

PARIS (JTA)—An Al-
giers criminal court has
sentenced 12 local youths to
suspended prison sentences
for breaking into and loot-
ing the city's only
synagogue last December.
The court reached its ver-
dict of suspended sentences
after Roger Said, president
of the Algerian Jewish com-
munity, told the court that
the city's Jews were pre-
pared to pardon the defend-
ants because of their age.
He declared that while
the Jewish community advo-
cated suspended sentences
for the minors it could not
agree to have their caF -
treated as "a minor brea
in and theft affair." Sara
also stated that the Jewish
community protested
against certain local press
reports which claimed that
"the entire affair was in-
spired by the Zionists."
He called on the court to
take a stand on this issue.
The court decided to rule
later on this.

Legal Status
for Prostitues

JERUSALEM (JTA)= A
government-appointed com-
mittee headed by Tel Aviv
District Court Judge Hadas-
sah Ben-Ito has recommend-
ed that prostitution be legal-
ized. It also called for liber-
alization of other laws per-
taining to sexual conduct.
The committee consists of
sociologists and legal e -,z-
perts.
The committee went so
far as to pro-pose that "dis-
creet" advertising by pro-
stitutes be permitted in
newspapers and that pro-
stitutes be allowed to re-
ceive customers in certain
hotels. Sexual relations in
cars would also be per-
missible provided it did not
constitute a public nui-
sance.
The committee estimated
that there are approx-
imately 1000 prostitutes ac-
tive in Tel Aviv and more
than 100 in Jerusalem.
