Soviet Trade Offer
in Reality German
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Is-
raeli newspapers bannered
a story Wednesday that a
Soviet trading company had
offered commercial ties
with Israel. The papers
speculated on the re-estab-
lishment of relations with
the Soviet Union after a 10-
year break.
The company. however,
turned out to be a West Ger-
man firm, based in Paris,
with an office in a hotel
suite in Moscow.

CONSUMER'S REPORT
SAYS... "Manufacturers of
frozen entrees are not doing
anything illegal by not put-
ting an estimated number
of servings on package
labels. The Government
doesn't say they must. The
Government does say that
any label illustration is
supposed to bear a reason-
able resemblance to the
product inside." We'll ignore
the fact that the photo-
graphs on some of the pack-
ages show the contents set
off with an appealing array
of parsley sprigs and
cherry tomatoes, or po-
tatoes and vegetables—none
of which are usually in the
packages. We'll assume con-
sumers are onto that
"Serving Suggestion" dodge
by now.
But we can't ignore anoth-
er dodge—the hide-the-
gravy trick. In this one, a
good portion of the gravy
content of the package is
pictured in a bowl along-
side the entree, making the
meat portion look more gen-
erous than it really is.
Those dodges are per-
fectly legal. So, in fact, is
the low meat-to-gravy ratio
in the entrees. The U.S. De-
partment of Agriculture
says "Gravy and Salisbury
Steak" must contain at
least 35 percent meat prod- k
uct by weight, while "Salis-
bury Steak and Gravy"
must contain at least 50 per-
cent meat product. The
USDA also says that a
gravy and sliced-beef prod-
uct must contain at least 35
percent meat, and a gravy
and sliced-turkey product,
at least 15 percent. Of the
products we tested for this
report, only the beef prod- k
ucts generally fell below
those guidelines. That's
small consolation, however,
when you're paying meat k
prices for gravy.'
