a restaurant where one
table might have people eat-
ing corned beef sandwiches,
pizza, matzo ball soup and
veal parmigiana...while an-
other table might have still
another variation.
Make no mistake about
it, the new Fiddler On The
Rye restaurant opened by
Inge and Larry Stockier on
Orchard Lake Rd. just
south of Maple, is a delica-
tessen...but you can have
pizza, too, or other Italian
specialties to go along with
some good old-fashioned
Jewish cooking by Helen
Greenberg...Even plain
American favorites like
bar-b-q ribs...Larry defies
anyone to beat his ribs and
pizza...or Helen's home-
made soups.
In the respect of its menu
service, Fiddler On The
Rye is most quaint...hardly
anything like it anywhere
that we know.
It had been opened only
five weeks when a fire
razed the delicatessen-res-
taurant...Now, three weeks
after re-opening, it has
gained an enormous
amount of recognition for
being something people
wanted...a place that is
very different.
Fiddler On The Rye seats
about 170 in a wide expanse
room of barnyard wood
walls intermingled with
blonde knotty pine-looking
formica and drop-ceiling
lighting...One side, where
once was a fruit market, is
the restaurant...Other side
contains the kitchen, delica-
tessen counter, pizza ovens,
etc.

OPEN 7 DAYS . . . SUN THRU THURS 11 a.m.-2 a.m. FRI. & SAT., 11 a.m.-3

IF YOU LIKE -OREEKTOWN .. .
YOU'LL LOVE YAM° VILLAGE.,

Larry is a former army
cook and a stickler on clean-
liness.Wife Inge gleams
with pride at their delicates-
sen, etc. operation...Joe Kai-
ser is manager and they
even have someone working
behind the counter with a
name to go along with their
place, Jeff Fidler.
Open Tuesday through
Sunday, Fiddler On The
Rye is actually whatever
you want it to
be... delicatessen, pizza,
bar-b-q ribs, chicken, home-
made Jewish dishes, Italian
specialties and much more.
Whatever it may be, how-
ever, one thing is
sure...Fiddler On The Rye
certainly challenges the
imagination... and is for
real.
IF A. RESTAURANT does
not accept reservations, it
is probably because of
being so busy that it can
get away without offering
the convenience... Call any-
way and ask if the place is
likely to be crowded when
you want to go...Sometimes
you will get a helpful an-
swer, sometimes an honest
one, sometimes both.
"THIS GUY IS great! I'd
like to open a place in Las
Vegas for him! "...Sid Hud-
son was talking about Carl
Steger at Jakks on Green-
field and 10 Mile Rd.
Carl had long since
played on the piano' and
sang "You're My Every-
thing" which is Sid's favor-
ite song...and was still tick-
ling away at the ivories and
vocalizing with more talent
than we had ever seen him
display.
Being a Las-Vegas-ite for
almost 25 years, since leav-
ing Detroit, Sid has been liv-
ing on the Strip at the Fla-
mingo Hotel...Iirectly
amidst the world's greatest
entertainment.
Sid has seen the best of
them...and when he pays
Carl Steger such a com-
pliment, it means -
something !
Sid also extolled the vir-
tues of Topinka's Country
House on Telegraph and
Seven Mile Rd... "I never
thought Detroit had such a
terrific place (he had
steak) and the waitress,
Val Burnett, was absolutely
wonderful."
With Sid were Al Sklar of
Penn F. ..iiiture and wife
Mildrea, both of whom re-
marked about Topinka's
Country House being
among the 'finest places
they have eaten at...and ad-
mitting.. like so many
others, that they never
think of it when dining
