The assembly will also
mark the 10th anniversary
of the reunification of Je-
rusalem, Cottler said.
Cottler was 21 when he en-
listed in the Jewish Legion.
He recalls that there were
about 40 Detroiters who re-
sponded to the recruiting by
the British which was per-
mitted at the time although
this country was not at war
with Turkey.
Two other Detroiters, Cot-
tler believes, are among
the surviving Legion-
naires—Al Bunin and Jo-
seph Bookstein.
In the original Detroit
group were A. Avrunin,
Nathan Linden, J. Halpern,
Ezra Posner and J.E.
Schwartz.
Cottler recalled that the
recruiting here was con-
ducted by David Ben-Gu-
rion who served in the Le-
gion with him. Other no-
tables who served with him
were Itzhak lien-Zvi, who
later became the second
President of Israel; Dov Jo-
seph, who was governor of
the Jerusalem area during
the war of liberation; Ger-
shon Agronsky, later
Agron, who was editor of
the Jerusalem Post and
mayor of Jerusalem; and
many others who later dis-
tinguished themselves as
Jewish leaders.
Vladimir Jabotinsky was
among the officers of the
battalilion in which he
served.
Cottler enlisted in Febru-
ary 1917 and served until
1919. The legionnaires first
served for three months in
Egypt and when they re-
belled and demanded to be
