Jews Protest Washington Post Publicity Given to Hanafis WASHINGTON (JTA )— The Jewish Community Council of Greater Washing- ton expressed its "shock" to the Washington Post last Friday after that news- paper had published an ar- ticle April 14 sympathetic to the Hanafi Moslems under two eight-column ban- ner lines that read "The Ha- nafis See Themselves as Op- pressed and Isolated" and "Hanafi Muslim Blames 'Zi- onist' Jews for Group's Plight." Criticizing the Post's edi- torial judgement, the Coun- cil said it is "ironic" that the "Hanafi anti-Jewish ca- nard and distortions of his- tory and fact reminiscent of Nazi statements" appeared on the day Jews observe "Heroes and Martyrs Day" in memory of the millions of victims of the Nazi holocaust. The Post carried the Council's protest of approx- imately 160 words on page two of its third news sec- tion Friday under a one-col- umn head, "Jews Score Post Story on Hanafi." The Post's story of ap- proximately 2,000 words by a staff writer, Joseph D. Whitaker, was almost total- ly devoted to his interview with Reginald A. Hawkins Jr. a brother-in-law of Ha- nafi Moslem leader Khalifa Hamaas Abdul Khaalis who, with a dozen gunmen on March 9, took over three Washington buildings, in- cluding the Bnai Brith head- quarters, and held 134 hos- tages for 39 hours' The Whitaker story that featured the Post's . third section, reported Hawkin's view that "the quest of Zion- ist Jews throughout history has been to destroy the Is- lamic faith and enslave its believers." Hawkins was quoted as saying, "The Zion- ists teach that anyone who is not Jewish is a beast. In fact if was the Zionists that were the cause of us being brought into this country." The Post's account did not attempt to challenge or contradict or refute Hawk- ins' statements which Whita- ker reported. Whitaker also wrote that Hawkins left Christianity eight years ago to embrace the Moslem faith and took the name of Abdul Salim. Leaders of the Jewish Community Council, which represents 180 organizations and agencies in the Wash- ington area, sought a meet- ing with the Post's manage.- ment. Benjamin Bradlee, its executive editor, met with Ernest Shalowitz, the Council's vice-president, and Daniel Mann, the execu- tive director. They left their statement with Bradlee which the Post pub- lished. 1,3 DAVID TAL AARON LEVY ada, will make the presenta- tions at 4 p.m. He will also acknowledge Israeli stu- dents who are returning to Israel after completing their studies in the U.S. Tomorrow_ (Tour Israel through coins, stamps, and medals) 1:45, 5 — Israeli Artist Yacov Agam Videotape 12:30, 2, 3:30 — Wine Mak- ing Demonstration _ 12 Belly Dancing 12:30 — Josh Tabak Radio Show 1 — Hashomer Hatzair Dance Troupe 1 — Magic Show 1:30, 3:30 — Fashion Show 1:30 — Puppet Show 2 — Creative Arts Festival ( Youth Groups and Awards) 2:30 — Puppet Show 3:15 — Magic Show 3:30 — Lecture in Hebrew: by Dr..
