and two spies hanged in
Cairo in 1955 in exchange
for 47 Arab terrorist prison-
ers this week, on the eve of
Yom Hashoa, Remem-
brance Day.
The two spies, Dr. Moshe
Marzouk and Shmuel Azar,
were executed as part of
the infamous Lavon Affair.
The nine soldiers' remains
were unidentified.
Originally, 58 prisoners
were scheduled to be re-
turned to Egypt in the Sinai
exchange, but 11 of the pris-
oners told Red Cross offi-
cials at the exchange point
that they preferred to re-
main in Israel.

such newcomers who have
settled in Brooklyn's Coney

area. Project ARI is spon-
sored by the Associated

Israelis, French
to Probe Cancer
PARIS (JTA)—Israel's
Weizmann Institute and
France's Institut Pasteur
embarked last week on a
joint program of intensive
cancer research. France's
Health Minister Simone
Veil said the project "is a
symbol of what scientists
can do when they place
themselves above national
ambitions."
Veil was addressing a
press conference at which
the project was announced.
The Minister also said Leon-
ard Bernstein will conduct
the French National Orches-
tra next month at a gala
performance to help raise
money for the program.
The Weizmann-Pasteur
project is a private venture
but, Veil said, it is being
conducted within the frame-
work of existing Franco-Is-
raeli scientific agreements.
Panther Leader
SentencedforTheft
JERUSALEM (JTA)—
Charlie Biton, a Black Pan-
ther leader who has the
third sport on the Rakah
Knesset election list, may
spend election day in jail.
He was sentenced last week
to three months in prison
for his part in a theft of
food which was distributed
to poor families in Jerusa-
lem.
Biton admitted at the
time that he participated in
the food warehouse break-
in together with other
Black Panthers who expro-
priated IL 10,000 worth of
food products. However, he
argued that it was a politi-
cal act to protest against
the government's policy of
reducing food subsidies for
poor families.
Peres Wants
Warning System
JERUSALEM (JTA)—In
a book to be published short-

mon Peres suggests the
erection of a joing Israel-
Jordan warning system
along the Jordan River, sim-
ilar to the warning system
operating in the Sinai be-
tween Israel and Egypt.
