Artist Gropper Memorialized

-

In memory of the recent death of American Jewish political cartoonist and painter
William Gropper, Jewish Currents magazine ran a reproduction of Gropper's 1942 oil,
"The Invaders," on the cover of its April issue. *Gropper was born in 1897 in New York,
and drew cartoons for a number of national periodicals to support himself while he stud-
ied painting. He later became a leading painter in the American social realism move-
ment, with his depictions of factory workers, the Dust Bowl and the . Spanish Civi War.
Gropper's visit in 1948 to the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto male a deep impression on him,
and he began to paint Jewish subjects. In his work after 1948, the Jew of Eastern Europe
is presented as the epitome of all suffering mankind.

NEW YORK (JTA)—The
New York Board of Educa-
tion launched its first Jew-
ish -Heritage Week with a
program of drawings,
songs, music, readings and
dance by school children.
The program took place at
the board's headquarters in
Brooklyn.
Richard Ravitch, presi-
dent of the Jewish Commu-
nity Relations Council of
New York, which had been
instrumental in getting the
board to establish the week,
told some 100 persons at-
tending the ceremony, that
the experiences of Jews in
New York City will be of
benefit to newer immigrant
groups to the city. He said

Is this the
feature that
works' best on
your present
copier?

Nothing is more frustrating wheri you're in a jarmfor
copies than to find your copier in a jam of its own. With
its "Call Key Operator" button pitifully flashing for
help,-your temperamental office copier. once again
becomes the office bottleneck.
At Savin, we've eliminated the need for a "pani c
button" by eliminating a lot of the causes-for panic. The
Savin 770 plain paper copier is the most reliable
machine on the market. It's practically jam proof. Half '
of all jams are caused by long, twisting paper paths. In
some Xerox machines, for example, a copy twists and
turns over 4 feet. In the. Savin 770 a copy moves a mere
12 inches from storage cassette to reproduction in the
simplest paper path possible. Obviously, the less
distance a copy has to travel, the better the chances are
that it will survive the trip.
So,'before the call for help light goes on again, help
yourself by calling us for a demonstration of the Savin
770 plain paper copier.

JERUSALEM - (JTA)—A
helicopter mishap Tuesday_
involving Premier Yitzhak
Rabin and Foreign Minister
Yigal Allon has aroused
sharp criticism of govern-
ment leaders for flying in
the same aircraft. Tile mis-
hap occured when a helicop-
ter, carrying Rabin. Allon
and several senior military
officers to Sinai expe-
rienced engine failure and
was forced to land on a
Gaza .Strip beach. No one
was hurt. ,
Zeev Schiff, military cor-
respondent of Haaretz,
called the incident irrespon-
sible and recalled the re-
cent death of Queen Alia of
Jordan when her helicopter
crashed in a freak storm.
In 1973 West German
Chancellor Willy Brandt, on
a visit to Israel, had a nar-
row escape then his helicop-
ter almost fell off the edge
of Masada.
