Center Israel Independence Events

The Jewish Community
Center will kick off its Is-
rael Independence Week cel-
ebration with a reception to
meet artists Ella and
Shmuel Raayoni, whose
works will be on display
throughout the celebration,
7:30 p.m. Saturday in the
Allen Lounge of the Center.
At 8:30 p.m., the Duo
Reim will entertain in Shiff-
man Hall. There is a charge
for the concert.
Sunday's activities in-
clude a 2 p.m. talk by Con-
gressman William M.
Brodhead. who will focus
on - Jewish Concerns Israel
and Domestic: Ninety Days
With the Carter Adminis-
tration." Co-sponsored by
the Jewish Community
Council, Congressman

Brodhead will speak in the
Aaron DeRoy Studio Thea-
ter. The nursery will be the
scene of an Israel birthday
party for children in kinder-
garten through second
grade, and It will take
place at 2. At the same
time, youth zimriyah will
take place in Shiffman
Hall. The annual El Al air-
plane contest will take
place at 4 p.m. in Room
134, and the day's activities
will conclude with a 7:30
p.m. lecture by Yigal An-
tebi, who will speak on "Is-
rael: The Political and The
Social Structure." The talk
will be held in the studio
theater.
On Monday, "The Mad Ad-
ventures of Rabbi Jacob"
will be shown at 1:30 and

Israeli merchandise will
be a major attraction at the
Israel Expo '77, an Israel In-
dependence Day celebration
for the entire community,
to take place 11 a.m.-11
p.m. April 24 at Adat Sha-
lom Synagogue.
The trade fair will fea-
ture T-shirts, bathing suits,
'leather goods, glassware,
copperware, brassware, ce-
ramics, . olivewood, gif-
tware, religious and ceremo-
nial items, toys, silver and
gold jewelry, cosmetics,
paddle ball games, rummi-
kub, greeting cards,
stamps, coins, medals, post-
ers, hats, oil paintings, lith-
ographs, sculptures and
foods. Israeli-=foods will be
served on that day at two lo-
cations, in a Tel Aviv style
cafe and a short order res-
taurant.
A pamphlet will be dis-
tributed at the expo listing
all "made in Israel" prod-
ucts available in the Detroit
area. A number ot- retail
outlets will display their
products. Chairing the
trade fair are Steve Medow
and Norman Naimark.
In addition to the 30
booths of the trade fair, the
following groups will partici-
pate in the Expo with vis-
ual and informational cen-
ters: Israel Aliya Center,
Bar-Ilan University, Bnai
Brith, Detroit Zionist Feder-
ation, Habonim, Hadassah,
Hebrew University, Israel
Bonds, Jewish National

Fund, Labor Zionist Al-
liance, Pioneer Women,
Technion Society, United
Jewish Appeal and Zionist
Organization of Detroit.
Also on exhibition and for
sale will be the work of the
Israeli sculptress, Batia
Adith. Ms. Adith has stud-
ied under the supervision of
art teachers in London,
Paris and at the Antwerp
Academy of Art. She has
taught art at the Art Teach:
ers Seminary of Tel Aviv.
She has shown widely in Eu-
rope and the United States,
sharing top honors at
Knoke in Belgium with
Marc Chagall and represent-
ing Israel in the Inter-
national Art Exhibition of
Ostand, Belgium.
Two continuous film festi-
vals featuring films about
modern-day Israel, Israeli
art, universities in Israel,
the Israeli Air Force and ki-
butz life also will he shown
at the expo.
A nursery school will be
provided between the hours
of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for
children between the ages
of 3 and 6 at no charge, fea-
turing a birthday party for
Israel, and magic and pup-
pet shows.
The Israel-Expo '77 is
coordinated by the Detroit
Zionist Federation and the
Jewish Educators Council.
Tickets in the form of pass-
ports will be available at
the door at a nominal
charge.

Wednesday and Thursday,
11 p.m. April 23 and 3:30
and 7 p.m. April 24.
Tuesday's main event
will be a 7:30 p.m. memo-
rial service which will pay
tribute to those who fought
and died in Israel's wars
for liberation. Shaul Ben-
Meir and Rachel Oliver will
perform. The film,
"LIOR," will be shown.
Both will take place ip the
studio theater.
An Israeli 'cabaret and
cinema will be the feature
on April 23 when the Israel
Ensemble, Abraham Ben
Ze'ev and Norma Gold-
enberg will entertain.
Music. dancing and Israeli
refreshments will highlight
the evening. The cabaret
will open at 9 p.m. in Shiff-
man Hall. Admission is
nominal.
The Lobby Shop will be
open throughout the week
featuring Israel products.
Souvenirs of the 10th World
Maccabia Games also will
be sold at the shop.

`Israeli Week'
at WSU Hillel

Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tion on the Wayne State Uni-
versity campus will open
its annual "Israeli Week"
observance with an Israeli
coffeehouse to take place
8:30 p.m. Saturday at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek. The Young
Dancers Guild will perform
and there will be musical
and film presentations.
College students are in-
vited. Proceeds will benefit
the Israel Emergency
Fund.
Throughout the week the
foundation will sponsor vari-
ous Israel-related activities
on campus. Rev. John
Grauel, an Episcopal min-
ister who fought in Israel's
war for independence, will
give a lecture 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday in the Hilberry
Lounge of the Student Cen-
ter Building.
Middle Eastern foods, a
backgammon tournament
and a multi-media presenta-
tion in the Hillel lounge, 667
Student Center Building,
will round out the week's ac-
tivities.
