Unlike other adult courses in the area, those offered by the Midrasha focus so- lely on Jewish life. These in- clude Jewish philosophy, lit- erature, history, current problems of Israel's rela- tions to world Jewry and the study of the Bible and the Talmud. The Southfield-based Midr- asha shares its 12 Mile-Lah- ser facilities with the United Hebrew Schools, which created the program. In addition to his Midrasha post, Dr. Stern is superin- tendent of the UHS, of which Milton Lucow is pres- ident. Together with UHS, the Midrasha is a charter mem- ber agency of the Jewish Welfare Federation and is a beneficiary of the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund. Norman D. Katz is chair- man of the Midrasha board of directors. The Midrasha, Dr. Stern explains, is the only Jewish private college in Michigan. The Midrasha was found- ed in 1948 to train Hebrew teachers. However, because of declining enrollment, the college altered its course and is concentrating more attention than in the past on general adult education. It continues to provide a liberal Jewish education leading to an associate of Hebrew letters degree, bachelor of Hebrew letters or a moreh Ivri (teaching certificate). Stern emphasizes that the aim is not to popularize courses just to attract num- bers. "We have opened our enrollment to the general public but have maintained the highest scholastic stand- ards." Yosef Levanon, dean and assistant professor, says that anyone, Jew and non- Jew, may attend Midrasha classes. Three-fourths of the students. including doc- tors, businessmen, lawyers and housewives, take non- credit courses. At present, 130 students attend classes at the main campus in Southfield. Ex- tending its services to the wider community. the Midr- asha also provides .instruc- tors for the University of Detroit, Oakland University and Marygrove College. The Midrasha library is open to the public and has one of the largest collec- tions of Jewish works in the Midwest. For information, call the Midrasha, 353-7117.
