THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Says It Won't Tolerate Attacks on Lebanon Christians JERUSALEM (JTA)—Is- \ rael declared Tuesday that it would not "stand idly by" — if Lebanese Christian en- claves adjacent to its north- ern border were attacked. Foreign Minister Yigal Al- Ion made the warning pub- lic during a television inter- • view, but it is understood that a similar message had been transmitted earlier. through U.S. auspices, to 13, "- the Levanese and the S n governments. yilon in his interview noted that to date the Pales- tinian attacks on the Chris- tians had been outside the Christian enclaves. At the Cabinet meeting earlier in the day Allon out- lined the four cardinal prin- ciples which molded Is- rael's stance towards the ongoing battles in southern Lebanon. His statement was later made available to the media. The four principles were: • Israel would not tolerate an advance of Synrian or "inter-Arab" forces south- wards from the line they now hold. (At present Syr- ian forces are stationed about 20 kilometres north of the border, a line to which they withdrew after Febru- ary's tense standoff with Is- rael. Israel television said Tuesday that some 30,000 Syrian troops and 400 tanks were sighted some 30-40 kms north of the border and -Israel's entire north- ern border was being pre- pared to meet the possi- bility of a Syrian thrust. - • Israel would not tolerate hits by Palestinian terror- ists. whether by infiltration across the border or by shooting or shelling from the Lebanese side. • "As Jews with so much experience of persecution" Israel would not tolerate at- tacks on the neighboring Christian villages, and would not permit a slaugh- ter of friendly Christians who are within our reach." (Wednesday morning there were grateful reac- tions from Lebanese Chris- tians on the northern bor- der.) • Israel would not tolerate any disturbance of its hu- manitarian aid efforts at the "good fence." Meanwhile. more than 30 Lebanese. mostly youths and children, were in Is- raeli hospitals this week for treatment of injuries suffer- ed in the continuing fighting between Moslems and Chris- tians in Southern Lebanon. The injured were brought to Israel through the open- ing in the border fence. A Christian militiaman who participated in the battle for the village of Hiam, now in the hands of Palestinian terrorists, re- portedly told Israelis that the terrorists killed or wounded any Lebanese sus- pected of having received medical aid or any ether as- sistance from Israel. Reports from Lebanon quoted terrorist sources as Saying that they had stopped fighting under orders from PLO chief Yasir Arafat. Arafat was apparently acting under pressure from Syria which wants the Moslems and Christians to stop the shoot- ing lest it escalate to a point where Israel might in- tervene. Likud MK Uriel Lin de- manded that the govern- ment intervene immedi- ately in Lebanon on behalf of the Christians. The same demand was made by Mayor Avraham Aloni of the border town of Kiryat Shmona. He also urged the government to strengthen Israel's border defense in the north. - Zionism May Be Debate Topic of Arabs, Allies at UN Parley UNITED NATIONS (JTA)—The Arab countries and their allies plan to in- ject the issue of Zionism into the deliberations of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECO- SOC) during its five-week session which opened. Tuesday at the UN. lations of human rights in the occupied territories, Is- raeli diplomats said that Is- rael is prepared to prove that these allegations are spurious. They said Israel will point out the fact that those countries that accuse it of human rights viola- tions, namely the Arab and Communist states, are themselves to be blamed for violations of human rights. Analysts Rate Sadat Poorly Instead, analysts in- dicated, he chose to be a partisan advocate of his own country and his imme- diate interests without per- ceptible movement towards that full settlement of which he himself spoke of but failed to implement. The best pro-Egyptian American officials could say of Sadat's visit was that they were satisfied with the tone of his detailed talks with President Carter. U.S. officials conceded that Sadat's visit did not move closer either the pro- cedure for a conference or the substance for a settle- ment. WASHINGTON (JTA)— When Joseph Sisco was the State Department's Middle East expert before becom- ing American University's president last summer, he was fond of saying that the Arab-Israeli conflict was a history of - lost opportu- nities. The latest of the losers ap- pears to be Egyptian Presi- dent Anwar Sadat. In his three-day Washington visit, with the world media fo- cused on him, political ana- lysts saw him fumbling the finest chance of his long campaign to win over Amer- ica by being a champion of a just Middle East, peace.
