THE "LUBAVITCHER" AT 75: I am not a Hasid, but I am impressed with the achievements of the. Luhavitcher Hasidic movement in this country. I am also impressed with the personality of the Luhavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Men- achem M. Schneerson, whose 75th birthday is now being festively marked by his followers all over the world. What impresses me especially is the fact that the Luba- vitcher movement is a people's movement. Unlike other Hasidic sects, it does not expect the people to come to the Rebbe, but reaches out to the masses. The Luhavitcher movement is similarly appealing be- cause its philosophy, while built on religion, is also based on the cultivation of three worldly concepts—hokhma (wis- dom), bina (understanding) and daat (knowledge). This ex- plains why, in addition to being called "the Luhavitcher Movement." it is also known as the ChaBaD movement. It concentrates not only on teachings concerning man's rela- tion to God but also man's humanity to man. Rabbi Schneerson, the present Rebbe of the world- wide Lubavitch-Chahad movement, is the seventh Rebbe of the dynasty. LUBAVITCHER IN U.S.: The Rebbe has never left New York during the 27' years of his leadership of the movement yet, he concentrated on developing massive educational and social programs in this country and abroad. From his headquarters in Brooklyn he strengthens Jew- ish education, Jewish identity and Jewishness in general. Today one finds in numerous cities in the U.S. Luhavitcher educational institutions ranging from kindergartens to all- day schools, and from evening classes for adults engaged in work during the day to religious classes for boys and girls of the public schools during their "released time" ap- proved by the Department of Education for religious in- struction. One also finds Luhavitcher youth centers and Chabad houses in dozens of cities across the U.S., Canada, West Germany, France, England, Belgium, Holland, Morocco, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and other countries. New dimensions have been reached by the Rebbe in es- tablishing a "Jewish Peace Corps" of volunteer students visiting farmers and Jews in small remote communities as teachers, bringing with them textbooks and other educa- tional material for parents and childreli. Millions of bociks, magazines and pamphlets published by the Luhavitcher movement in English, Hebrew and Yiddish reach Jews in small towns on the East and West Coasts via Luhavitcher bookmobiles which also carry lending libraries, juvenile li- brary editions, materials for Jewish holidays and Jewish religious articles. LUBAVITCHER IN ISRAEL: I know of no other Hasid- ic sect that has a street named after it in Israel. The Luba- vitcher movement has. It is the Rehov Chabad ("The Cha- bad Street") in the Old City of Jerusalem in the very heart of the narrow streets of the Arab market. DEAL DIRECT SAVE JERUSALEM (JTA)— . Lipshutz, who was presi- dent for three years of The Temple, a Reform congre- gation in Atlanta formed two years after the Civil War ended, led the service. The Union of American Hebrew Congregation's hag- gadot which have been in the Lipshutz family for years, were used. Both the President and Mrs. Carter read from them at the serv- ice. The usual symbols of the Passover seder were in evidence. It is believed to have been the President's first seder, Mrs. Carter, how- ever, had attended a seder previously, at least once.
