Jews Are Rejected by U.S. Employers
Monroe Engineer Exposes Saudi Arabia's
Anti-Israel Practices to Be Anti-Jewish
e
If ever there was a doubt
about the anti-Jewish prac-
tices of Saudi Arabia it was
exposed by an engineer
who described how he was
barred from Saudi Arabian
services because he is a
Jew.
Jack Swiebel, an engineer
now living in Monroe,
Mich., revealed his person-
al experience of discrimina-
tion by the Saudi Arabian
government in .a letter pub-
lished in the Christian Sci-
ence Monitor on March 28.
Swiebel's letter follows:
"I read with considerable
interest a recent article in
your paper by John Cooley,
your correspondent in Saudi
Arabia. In it he refers to Fa-
rouk al-Akhdar, the chair-
man of a Saudi royal com-
mission, as believing that
the Arab boycott of Israel
is a political measure, like
the U.S. boycott of Cuba or
China, not a matter of reli-
gion or discriminating
against Jews.'
"Having heard similar
statements before, Without

ness of same. I would like

happen to be a project
manager in the heavy con-
struction industry, with a
degree, approximately 20
years of experience, and
generally good references. I
am also a U.S. citizen and
a member of the Jewish
faith.
"Several months ago I
made it a point to answer
the advertisements of six
major U.S. construction
companies for work in
Saudi Arabia. Subsequently
I found out that several of
these companies had not
only checked by references
for qualifications, but had
also inquired as to what my
religion. was.
"As a result, two com-
panies never bothered to
reply, two other companies
.lauded my qualifications
but regretted being unable
to use same at this time,
and the remaining two com-
panies invited me for an in-
terview.
"Of these two, one com-
pany determined during my
interview that I was Jewish
(they asked me) and in
great confusion called the
whole thing off, saying that
the Saudi government
would never issue a visa to
a Jew to get into Saudi
Arabia.
"The second company
never mentioned religion at
first. I was interviewed,
had a physical test, was
hired and then proceeded to
apply for a Saudi Arabian
visa.
"I then found out that one
prerequisite for this visa is
a signed document from
your priest or minister, as
to what religion you are.
(They don't take your word
for it.) When I mentioned
getting a rabbi to vouch for
me there was again much
commotion and the whole
thing was called off.
"In both casesI pointed
out that they were discrimi-
nating against a fellow
American, in this land of
the brave and home of the
free. (I am also a veteran
of World War II, and the
Koream war.) It did little
good. In this regard the
drive for profit seems to
outweigh democratic consid-
erations.

"I have no desire to list
these companies by name,
since every company doing
business in Saudi Arabia
today has to follow these
rules or get kicked out."
