"In The Big Red House"
POST
THIS WAS SOMETHING
13-year-old Donald Apel
won't forget...the Bar Mit-
zva reception given at Mich-
igan Inn by his parents,
Carolyn and Fred
Apel...Here was an affair
Donald could say was truly
his...not an excuse his par-
ents would use for entertain-
ing their friends.
It was most unusual...and
a real party for young-
sters...All invitations sent
by Carolyn and Fred said
to bring whatever children
were in the family...no
limit...just let them know
how many...Not a drop of
hard liquor was to be had
for the adults...and the en-
tire ballroom at Michigan
Inn zoomed with youthful
excitement...Clowns galore
all over, continuous enter-
tainment, booths set up for
coney islands, pizzas, salad
bar, soft drinks, desserts
and chazzerei (popcorn, cot-
ton candy, peanuts, halava,
etc. )...Games on the back
wall were played with
paper money that had Don-
ald's picture on them...At
evening's end, they could
be redeemed for stuffed ani-
mals.
The ingenuity of Carolyn
and Fred Apel was a crown-
ing achievement...For Don
and his guests, it was most
unforgettable.
CORRECT DATE of the
City of Hope Detroit Busi-
nessmen's Group annual
dinner-dance this year, is
Oct. 16...in the beautiful
Renaissance Ballroom of
the new Detroit Plaza
Hotel.
KUNO FASEL, Switzer-
land-born, is the whiz head
of food and beverage at De-
troit Plaza...brought here
from the Johannesburg Car-
lton in South Africa...Renee
Stein, his administrative
secretary, is also from Jo-
hannesburg.
CHILDREN'S
DEPT...Janie Rossin, 6-
year-old daughter of Elaine
and Lou Rossin, had been
visiting at the home of one
of her small friends, and
when it came time for her
to go home the friend's
mother said, "Goodbye,
Janie, Come again soon.
We'd like to see more of
you. "...Little Janie looked
puzzled, then replied, "But
there isn't any more of
me."
CONGRATS...to Birdie
and Harold August on their
50th wedding anniver-
sary...to Ricki and Morris
Ratner on their 40th anni-•
versary...to Bernard Mond
on his 48th birthday.
THE WIFE of one of the
players on the Detroit Red
Wings hockey team admit-
ted to sportscaster Bud
Lynch, "It's really thrilling
to be married to a big-time
hockey star. Every time he
comes home he looks like a
different person."... (on ice,
though, the Red Wings all
look the same—pretty bad.)

FIRST YEAR barrister
Milt Hubert married wife
Sylvia, he gained 50
pounds...For their 41st wed-
ding anniversary coming up
this year, Milt promises to
take off that 50 and
more..He weighs 255...One
time, Sylvia called Milt at
home and said, "Hi, honey.
Put down that salami. "...A
stunned Milt couldn't
speak...how did she know!
A LOCAL DRESS shop
owner is thinking seriously
of framing a letter of com-
plaint that reached her re-
cently...It reads, "Please
cancel my order for mater-
nity dress model 61, which
you were supposed to deliv-
er to me three weeks ago,
My delivery turned out fas-
ter than yours. Respect-
fully, etc. etc."
LOOKING BACK On Col-
uinns Of Yesteryears...
FEB. 2, 1951... "It was a
mighty cold day at ground-
breaking ceremonies for
the new Jewish hospi-
tal...and Gov. G. Mennen
Williams, in his address,
jokingly remarked that
Nate Shapero of Cunning-
hams should pass out Hada-
col to all the freezing as-
semblage...When Nate got
up to speak, he said, "If
everyone used Hadacol, as
it is advertised, we
wouldn't need a Jewish hos-
pital!"
FEB. 10, 1956..."Young
woman, obviously a new-
lywed, came into Ham-
merstein Drugs in Oak
Park and asked Sam Ham-
merstein anxiously if the
baby tonic advertised by
the store really makes
babies bigger and strong-
er...Sam replied that there
had been no complaints on
it and that they sell quite a
bit... "I'11 take a bottle,"
said the woman, who then
asked in a whisper, "Who
takes this tonic, me or my
husband?"
MARCH 8, 1957... "Sgt.
Jimmy Coleman, ex-boxing
champ, stationed at the
Dearborn Recruiting Cen-
ter, left for Florida to be in-
terviewed by Columbia Pic-
tures producers for the role
of "Rocky" Marciano in the
movie to be made, "The
Marciano Story."...A long
time friend of the former
world heavyweight boxing
champ, Jimmy is the per-
sonal selection of Marciano
to play his life in the film."
