picked up 40 Jewish fa-
thers, mothers and children
in Bayonne, N.J., made its
way to Manhattan where
Sam Brown was taken

Brown is a short, roly-
poly, fast-talking New York-
er with the bounce of a
man half of his 60 years
who has been working in
the Jewish communal field,
mostly for the American
Jewish Congress, since he
was discharged from World
War II military service.
Brown developed the idea
for such tours when he was
doing organizational chores
for the AJCongress in New
Jersey, working out of New-
ark. A recurrent theme
emerging from his schmooz-
ing with rabbinical friends
was that they needed stimu-
lating activities for somno-
lent congregants. For a na-
tive New Yorker, who
started a public singing ca-
reer at the age of six with a
Jewish choir on Manhat-
tan's Lower East Side, and
who has always been fasci-
nated by the wealth of Jew-
ish memorabilia, current
and historical, in the New
York area, such tours were_
an inevitable response to
the pleas of his rabbinical
friends.
Brown tested the idea
with a pilot tour in 1970 for
25 members of a Paterson,
N.J. Sisterhood. That tour
took the women to the Span-
ish and Portuguese Syna-
gogue, Temple Emanu-el, a
mikveh, the Lower East
