THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Leading Latin America Rabbi Concerned for His Community BY HENRY LEVY (Copyright 1977. JTA. Inc.( c;) A year after his gradu- ation from the Jewish Theo- logical Seminary in 1958. Marshall Theodore Meyer, a 29-year-old adventur- esome rabbi went to Buenos Aires to serve as the assistant rabbi of a con- gregation. Today. eighteen years later. he is acknowl- edged as one of the out- standing leaders of Latin American Jewry, as the founder and rector of the Seminario Rabinico Latino American • and the Latin American director of the World Council of Syna- gogues, as well as the rabbi large congregation in s Aires, cpmmunidad El, which he estab- lished in 1963. "FIRST FOR A REASON" In less than two decades. this American rabbi has, in the words of Rabbi Wolfe Kelman, executive vice- president of the Rabbinical Assembly, "transformed the religious landscape of South America." He has helped develop a Conserva- tive Judaism that now func- tions in 11 Latin American countries and has a mem- bership of approximately 70,000 Jews among the esti- mated slightly more than a half million Jews resideht in this area. Interviewed, while on a recent visit to the United States, Rabbi Meyer has an ambivalence that sees the possibility of both Latin American Jewish .growth as well as eventual dis- memberment. Rabbi M eyer said: "Beyond the question of a doubt, the major issue for the Jewish community of Argentina is not anti-Semi- tism, nor political in- stability, but rather the dis- integration of Jewish life-- Corillicting Stories on Middle East Rift NEW YORK (ZINS)—The Israel-Arab contest has spilled' over from the diplo- matic arena onto the pages of Time and Newsweek, in the reporting of a recent en- counter between Egyptian President Sadat and PLO's "foreign minister," Farouk Kadoumi. In an exclusive interview with Time magazine, Sadat is quoted as saying that the Palestinians are ready for peace with Israel provided they have their own inde- pendent state composed of the West Bank and Gaza. Sadat also is reported as emphasizing that he was speaking not only for him- self but for the Palestinians as well. However, this assertion drew a categorical denial from Kadoumi. He is quoted in Newsweek as in- sisting that the Palestinians will not recognize the state of Israel even if such a Pa- lestinian state comes into being. Kadoumi also said that the Palestinians- will use such a self-governing entity as a springboard to "liber- ate the remaining areas of the Fathei-land," an oper- ation to be carried out in two phases: the firsst will be a restoration of the pre- June 1967 boundaries; and the second a push back to the 1948 partition lines. JERUSALEM (ZINS)— The Executive of the World Zionist Organization has de- cided to cut the budget of the coming Zionist Con- gress by almost 50 percent. The sum of $1,500,000 (in- stead of $2,800,000) was allo- cated to cover all expenses incurred in the course of the , Congress membership campaign, the cost of the elections 'as well.as the Con- gress itself. Jewish education has been largely secularis- tic but there is also a grow- ing awareness that without a profound basis in genuine Jewish sources and reli- gious living. there is little hope to stem a tide of assi- milation." Although he is too modest to say so, it is apparent that his success in developing the Seminario Rabbinico Latino Ameri- cano and the establishment of new synagogues, makes him feel that the country's Jewish community cane be saved. r He believes that the 300,000 Argentinian Jews-- he says that-the half million figure generally given by writers "is simply not true"--can survive despite the Cassandra-like prophe- cies that are so often voiced.
