decided that he would learn
to make them.
A native of Minsk, Rus-
sia, who has lived in Flint
most of his life. Dr. Sor-
scher began his hobby of
weaving taleisim about
three years ago after discov-
ering that the sisterhood of
the Philadelphia congrega-
tion stopped making the
prayer shawls.
He enrolled in weaving
classes at the Flint art in-
stitute—a teaching in-
stitution—and began mak-
ing experimental pieces.
When he decided he was
proficient enough, he began
making the taleisim for rel-
atives and friends. Soon
word spread of his crafts-
manship and he began get-
ting requests from the com-
munity.
Today, the sisterhood of
Cong. Beth Israel in Flint
makes arrangements to pur-
chase one of Dr. Sorscher's
works. He allows his cus-
tomer to choose the color,
but he takes control over
the design.
The talit, and its match-
ing, zippered and lined talit
bag, are usually ready in 90
days. There ate five sizes
in which they are avail-
able: children's, Bar Mit-
zva, and small, medium
and large adult.
Proceeds from the sale of
the prayer shawls are con-
tributed to the synagogue
building fund and the sister-
hood.
The taleisim are weaved
in Dr. Sorscher's basement.
They are never made on a
Friday or Saturday and are
of pure linen, pure wool or
a synthetic. They are com-
pletely kosher.
The fibers for the talei-
sim come from all over the
world, especially from Scot-
land and Denmark. He buys
the corner fringes from Bo-
remtein's Book Store in
Oak Park and frequently

These taleisim and talit bags are only a few of the
many produced by Flint dentist Dr. Sam Sorscher. A weav-
er in his spare time, Dr. Sorscher travels frequently to
find new fibers so that new color combinations may be
used for his works. Each talit sold is accompanied by a
matching, zippered and lined talit bag.

goes on trips to find new
fibers. Metallic fibers are
often used in the weaving
of the talit. _
The Flint dentist spends
much time on color corn-

binations, and each of his
pieces are completely differ-
ent.
His works have appeared
in several shows at the
Flint art institute.
