The Best of Everything 1

(Continued from Page 32)
wanted to play to a small
cocktail show crowd...She
may be a super entertainer,
but not great enough to pull
them at a second show in
the Detroit
area...Remember the Mich-
igan Palace?...So many
stars better known than
Liza "bombed - audience-
wise on the second show. -
You can believe that her
mother, Judy Garland,
never would have done
this...Judy didn't care if
there were 100
people...When she came to
perform, she performed...as
the real trouper Judy was.
So don't blame the
Raleigh House...The entire
fault lies with Liza Minelli
and Intrepid Produc-
tions...Metropolitan Detroit
may be a "hick" area to
Liza, but she'll discover
that the enemies she made
are the same kind of people
everywhere.
Now getting to per-
former's performers...Tony
Bennett has been booked
into the Raleigh House for
mid-June...and Bob Hope
and .Danny Thomas have
been contacted.,. These
-people are like - Liza's
mother was...show biz true
blooded!
ITALIAN OLDE AtrIC
son Southfield and 12 1/ 2
Mile, is under same own-
ership,-Sam Badala-
merite...Being Italian, Sam
wanted the Olde Attic to as-
sume a food image accord-
ing to his origin...which is
why the change...Day and
evening hostess Judy Green-
wald, is the daughter of
Ruth and Dave Greenwald.
THE FORMER West-
erner Beef Buffet on the
corner of Maple and Tele-
graph, is now opened as
Beau Jack's...a medium-
priced dining spot with
some dinners, ground
rounds, sandwiches and
cocktails...It is still owned
by Jack Cockran and son
Gary.
TOPINKA's Country
House on Telegraph and W.
Seven Mile, smorgasbord is
only three nites, Tuesday,
Wednesday and
Thursday...with 100 items in-
cluding .eight ent•ees...a
good buy at $8.95...Amy
Jackson does her very good
entertaining bit on -The
piano and vocals, Thursday
through Saturday.
UNTIL LAST October,
Helen and Paul Zuckerman
had twice been to Mitch's
Restaurant near Cass
Lake...On the second visit,
Helen and Paul met the old-
est son, Bill, and his
mother, Ella, who are both
of Greek background, and
had a pleasant chat, plus a
drink with them...About a
week later, Paul received a
phone call from a Bill Mit-•
chell who turned out to be
the same one...When Paul
asked how he could serve .
him in any way, Bill told
him that he and his wife
Edna, were going to Greece
for a two-week vacation,
but that he would like to
visit Israel for one day.
Naturally, -Paul expressed
pleasure that he wanted to
go to Israel, but also shock
that it would be only a one-
day visit. and asked Bill
answer was that

he wanted to fly over from
Greece to Israel to pur-
chase a floral wreath and
place it on the grave of Col.
Yonatan - Netanyahu who
was killed at En-
tebbe...Paul met him in Tel
Aviv, had already arranged
a room, car and driver and
insisted • that he not only
visit Bethlehem, which was
important to the Christians,
but also go to Jerusalem
and visit Yad Vashem, the
memorial to the Six Million
dead in the Holocaust...This
Bill and Edna did, and as a
result stayed 2 1 '2 days.
Since last October, Paul
and Helen have made three
trips to Israel...On this last
trip, they purchased some
Entebbe Commemorative
coins which the government
issued as a historical re:
minder of Entebbe_Four
days after arriving back in
Detroit, they went to
Mitch's Restaurant and pre-
sented both Mitch and his
mother with the coins.
Other than their great ap-
preciation, what impressed
them most about the coins
was that on oneside was a
quotation from the book of
Psalms reading, "He sent
from above and took me", 4
and the other side depicted
a plane and an olive
branch.
Bill excused himself for a
moment and returned to
the table with a check for
$2,000 for the United Jewish
Appeal, of which Paul is
president, to be "spent in Is-
rael in any way you see *
fit"...As Paul describes it, *
the scene was too emotional
to be able to put into words.
An aftermath of all this is
that Helen and Paul are
bringing in sometime this
summer, 10 "40 percent or
worse" disabled Israeli war
veterans...They will be
placed in 10 different
homes for a two-week stay
in Detroit, but which will in-
clude one full day in-
Washington. -
Bill Mitchell heard -about
this,_ too, and insisted that
he had room for two of the
boys in his home, and re-
quested to be a part...Paul
gently turned him down,
saying that he wanted them
in Jewish homes, at which
time Bill then insisted that
he should be given the privi-
lege of at least serving "the
