In this very special year, as Jerusalem cele- brates her 10th anniversary as a reunited city, we of the Prime Minister's Club must dedicate ourselves to continuing our support, in even greater amounts, and enlisting new members, in even greater numbers, so that Jerusalem, and the rest of Israel, can grow in economic strength. Traveling Ark Story Corrected Editor, The Jewish News: The article "Detroit's Traveling Holy Ark Finds New Home' written by Ir- ving I. Katz, executive sec- retary, Temple Beth El, in your newspaper of Feb. 25, 1977 was brought to my at- tention recently and after reading the article, I find certain discrepancies. The Holy Ark, which was part of the Cong. Beth Teph- ilath Moses in Mount Cle- mens. was recently trans- ferred to the Temple Beth Or in Raleigh, N.C., without cost or any other remuner- ation whatsoever. A mem- ber of the board of trustees made numerous inquiries, including the Temple Beth El, as well as the Jewish Museum in New York, and neither the Temple Beth El nor the Jewish Museum wanted the beautiful Holy Ark. It wasn't until the archi- tect who was designing the temple in Raleigh called one of the members of the board of trustees with re- gard to the disposition of the Holy Ark that it was de- cided by the board of trustees to give them the Ark for their new syna- gogue, without charge. The second discrepancy is the fact that the Cong. Beth Tephilath Moses did not decide to build a new synagogue with a new Ark, but was forced to vacate the synagogue which was the of*, synagogue in Ma- comb County for over 50 years. The City of Mount Cle- mens, as well as the State Highway Commission, want- ed the property upon which existed the synagogue in Mount Clemens. After six or seven years of negotiat- ing and threatening law suits with the city, the board of trustees reluc- tantly decided to accept the city's offer. With the monies obtained from the city, a new synagogue was built. Due to the high construc- tion costs and the new de- sign of the building and the limited funds that we had, the beautiful Holy Ark could not be utilized once again in the new syna- gogue. Many of the members of Beth Tephilath Moses will miss the beautiful Holy Ark that was such a part of the beautiful interior of the 50- plus year old synagogue where our parents, brothers and sisters and many great rabbinical dignitaries throughout the United States and the world wor- shipped for many years, but we know in our hearts that it has found a new home.
