KUDOS TO ... Arthur
Lang, who received a cita-
tion from the Jewish Com-
munity Council for his com-
munal service ... a fine
thing that Art's efforts in be-
half of Judaism are recog-
nized.

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

HENRY KALES had
been to a party the evening
before ... He awoke with an
oversized head and knew he
was in no condition for
work ... Calling his partner,
Sol Wise, he said the party
had been too much for him
and he wouldn't be able to
get to the office that day ...
"Well, take it easy and
relax," replied Sol, "hut
you didn't have to bother to
call—this is Sunday."
WINTERING IN Florida,
it's the yearly custom for
Rose and Murray Maisel to
have a party each winter
there for Detroiters, former
Detroiters and other friends
This year's was a cock-
tail party ... with the guest
list including community-
ites Rita Stifter, Pearl and
Abe Oslik, Donna and Caro-
lyn Lemberg and Betty and
Mike Handelman ... Ex-De-
troiters included Fay Za-
lenko of Los Angeles, Helen
and Bob Stemberg of Palm
Springs, and Sam Kaplan of
Desert Hot Springs, Calif.
BEST BETS Of The Week-
end ... Night of Games, Sat-
urday, by Ladies Auxiliary
of Jewish War Veterans,
Dept. of Mich., at Temple
Israel ... all proceeds for
veterans rehabilitation ...
Knights of Pythias, Detroit
No. 55, dinner-dance,- Satur-
day, at Shenandoah Country
Club ... City of Hope, Mr.
and Mrs. Group Good Old
Days dance, Saturday, at
Cong. Bnai David (sorry for
the head honcho boo boo in
last week's column ... Ruby
Samson is president, not
Charles Hoptman, who was
last year's top dog.)
MAIL DEPT. ... "Are
they going to put a side-
walk between Lincoln Rd.
and 10 Mile, west side of
Greenfield" ... Wondering.
According to State Rep.
Joe Forbes, who we con-
tacted regarding this ques-
tion., the route of Highway
696 before it crosses Green-
field, will go through the va-
cant property north of
American Federal Savings
... As it crosses Greenfield,
it will go through the Riv-
iera Apts. ... Because of
this, says Joe, and until a
definite decision is made by
the federal government as
to when to go ahead, he
doubts seriously whether
the City of Southfield on the
west side of Greenfield, or
Royal Oak Township on the
east side of Greenfield,
would put in sidewalks only
to be torn out again in the
very near future.
DR. LEONARD HABER,
always good for dental dil-
lies to tickle the ribs, tells
about two men meeting on
the street ... One was suffer-
ing ...• and in agony ...
"What can I do to relieve
this awful pain?" he
moaned to his friends ...
"You know what I do?"
said the other guy helpfully.
"When I have a toothache
or a pain, I go over to my

IT'S A SOMETHING dif-
ferent thing for the Jewish
Community Center Sym-
phony Orchestra, this Sun-
day, at the Center in West
Bloomfield ... Tenor Robert
Angus and soprano Joan
Tallman doing selections
from "Porgy and Bess,"
"West Side Story" and "Fid-
dler On The Roof" ...
Should be most entertain-
ing.

LITTLE BOBBY Cohen
reached for the pie plate on
the table, and his mother,
Andrea Cohen, wanted to
know why he always
reached for the biggest
piece, asking if he didn't
think his older brother
ought to have it ... "I
should say not," said
Bobby, as he scooped up
the piece of pie. "He was
eating pie five years before
I was born."
LOOKING BACK On Col-
umns Of Yesteryears:
JAN. 10, 1956 ... "Frank
Adell left to spend the week-
end doing a bit of skiing at
Boyne Mountain in Boyne
City ... He was just outside
West Branch when Mich-
igan State troopers stopped
his car and took Frank into
custody without giving any
reason ... It all turned out
more or less as a joke and
a big favor to Frank, who
had left his skiing equip-
ment at home ... Assistant
Prosecutor Morrie Gruskin
put in a radio call to the
troopers to hold Frank until
brother Mary arrived with
the necessary skiing equip-
ment he had left behind."
JAN. 13, 1956 ... "William
Freedman and Oscar Rap-
paport paid a recent visit to
new home of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Abernathy on Muir-
land Ave. and were being
shown through the house ...
They had already noticed a
mezuza on the front door,
and discovered one at the
bedroom entrance, although
the Abernathys are Catholic
..,While Bill and Oscar won-
dered, it was explained that
the mezuzot were left by
the previous occupants, and
were. kept there ... Their
priest had visited them and
seeing the mezuza on the
front door, agreed that it
should remain, saying,
`Don't take it down. It was
on Our Lord's door, too.' "
