Friday, March 25, 1977 25 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS AjCongress Issues Warning on Biased Film About Israel Temple Beth El's Katz Lauded la NEW YORK—The Ameri- can Jewish Congress has prepared a fact sheet to counter a recently released film on Israel that presents "a distorted and hostile ex- amination of the history of Zionism, the Palestinian question, and discrimina- tion against Oriental Jews in Israel." The 30-minute film, To Live in Freedom," was pro- duced by Simon Louvish' and a predominantly Israeli crew. The fact sheet, which was drawn up by Julius Schatz, director of the Commission on Jewish Life and Culture of the American Jewish Con- gress, states: "The film presents, in ,a skillful and subtle manner, an Israel which is the source of all evil. The view- er of the movie would gain the impression that there is not one positive trait in the society, the laws, the politi- cal composition or the for- eign policy of the state. Katz is also an expert in Hebrew, which he speaks fluently. His Yiddish is also a mkhayeh, though most of his works are in English. Dr. David Patterson, prin- cipal of the Qxford Center for Post-Graduate Hebrew Studies, • says -that he is trying to' raise $3 million to give the center as firm a fi- nancial base as the older colleges of Oxford Univer- sity. Lewis, 46, a career foreign service officer who is Assistant Secretary of State for International Or- ganizations will be appoint- ed the next U.S. ambassa- dor in Israel. He will replace Malcolm Toon who has been named ambassador to Moscow. The choice of Lewis was conveyed to Israel in the last few days and no objec- tions are expected, accord- ing to sources. Lewis won out against two other candidates who had been considered for the post: Marvin Kalb, diplo- matic correspondent for CBS, and George S. Vest, a career diplomat. The choice of ambassador to Is- rael is considered particu- larly important in view of President Carter's attention to the Middle East. The project was made possible with the cooper- ation of Viktor Shenitov, Israel's Minister of Health, and Prof. Yaakov Menchell, director gen- eral of the ministry, Shlomo Twersky, dfrector of the P.A. program, said; Linda Shaw and Shir- ley Litwak, both in their final year of the Touro program, left for Israel on Feb. 27. They will spend two months at Laniado Hospital in Natanya, one month in obstetrics- gynecology and one month in internal medi- cine. Both rotations will include service in the re- spective outpatient de- partments. The students' final month in Israel will be spent working in a mental health clinic in Jerusalem.
