Commentaries, New Definitions
Add Merit to Schostak Hagada

In a chapter describing
the history of the Hagada,
in his newly published work
for the Passover Seder
which he has entitled "Why
Is This Night Different?"
Rabbi Zev Schostak, the
principal of the Detroit
Akiva Hebrew Day School,
states that since the 15th
century 2,700 different Haga-
dot have been published.
He may have under-
estimated the number, so
vast is the field of Hagada
publishing.
Like so many of the nu-
merous Hagada texts, the
Schostak volume has much
to offer.
There is, for example, the
brief chapter providing a
history of the Hagada.
Rabbi Schostak states:
"The Hagada was appar-
ently compiled by the Geo-
nim as the oldest known
version was the one found
in the Siddur of Saadia
Gaon (10th Century). How-
ever, another early version
of the Hagada appeared in
`Mahzor Vitry' in the 11th
Century, while the Hagada
text in Maimonides' `Mis-
hna Torah' may be traced
to the 12th Century."
Rabbi Schostak's facts
are fully annotateed. His is,
of course, a traditional Ha-
gada, with the full Hebrew
text and a modern trans-
lation. The importance of
his work lies in the explana-.
tions about the Seder, the
advice on the symbolisms,
the definitions of the laws
of Passover, including all
necessary facts in guidance
for the student and for
those conducting the histor-
ic program at the Passover
feast.
The commentaries have
special merit. Taking the
"Shfokh Hamatkha" as an
example," Rabbi Schostak
explains:
'Oddly, the verses of
Shfokh Hamatkha selected
from the Psalms and Lam-
entations, were added to
the Hallel. Why these
verses were inserted at this
point in the Hagada per-
plexes many com-
mentators. The view shared
by the Abarbanel and Vilna
Gaon is as intriguing as it
is logical. The section of
the Hagada following the
meal projects the future vi-
sion that God will vindicate
our people.
"In Shfkoh Hamatkha the
Jew declares that ulti-
mately God will punish all

MIAMI

those who destroyed our
people in body and spirit.
These verses are, in es-
sence, part of the Hallel
declaring that God will
seek retribution from our
enemies just as He avenged
us in Egypt. We continue
the Hallel with the wish
that God seek revenge "not
for our sake," but rather
"because of Thy kindness
and Thy truth." (Psalm
115 : 1 )."
Thus, there is much that
is new in the Schostak Ha-
gada, adding it merit-
oriously to the many texts
that have appeared through
the ages and keep being
published to this day.

(JTA)—Initial
funding of about $130,000
through the Comprehensive
Employment Training Act
has- been received by the
Miami Jewish Vocational
Service for a training pro-
gram to help in resettle-
ment of Soviet Jewish
•emigres. The funding is
under sub-contract with the

Dade County manpower con-
sortium, JVS officials said.

Secret U.S. Letter
Backs Weak Rabin

TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
The newspaper Haaretz
claims that former U.S.
Ambassador to Israel
Malcolm Toon wrote a
secret letter to
Washington saying that
American interests
would best be served with
Yitzhak Rabin, rather
than Shimon Peres, as Is-
rael's prime minister.
The Ha'a,retz story
claims the letter stated
that Rabin would be
quicker to capitulate to
American demands to
maintain U.S. friendship.
The story also linked to
Israeli politics U.S. Sec-
retary of State Cyrus
Vance's trip to Israel just
prior to the Labor Party
convention and Rabin's
trip to the,U.S.
